The American Beatles... What was the Great American Rock Band?

This seems out of date, but I can’t shake a question I’ve been pondering since VH1’s merciless listings earlier this decade. When talking about the greatest rock bands of all time, the debate almost always boils down to The Beatles vs. The Rolling Stones, with the occasional argument for Led Zeppelin. I can’t help but notice that these bands are all from England. Sure, one could argue for Dylan, Hendrix, Ray Charles, or Elvis, but these are really all solo artists. Who then would you say represents us as “our Beatles,” or the Great American Rock Band?
