Andrew Bird——acclaimed multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and whistler—- will headline a free show Sept. 3 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs will announce Friday.

Bird has released 10 albums in a career that spans more than a decade with a quirky style that draws on gypsy music, folk, swing and Dixieland jazz. His shows now routinely sell out venues such as the 2,200-capacity Riviera Theatre.

“I’ve wanted to play on the Pritzker stage since before it opened,” Bird said in a statement Thursday night. “To play outside in my home town is pretty much an ideal situation and should be a nice break from summer festival mayhem. Though I will be playing much of the show with my band I’m especially excited about playing some solo pieces and trying to fill such a limitless space.”

In addition to Bird, the summer concert calendar in Grant Park is starting to fill in, with several performances confirmed Thursday. These include a tribute concert July 20 honoring blues giant Buddy Guy with Jimmie Vaughan and Lou Ann Barton at the Pritzker Pavilion.
