EARLIER: Urb vs. Pitchfork: The Great Steve Aoki Debate of 2008

Urb:

”[Pitchfork would] rather be giving Arcade Fire the obligatory handjob while posted up in their Chicago digs (Chicago indie rock, btw, is the most pretentious smarter-than-thou scene in the entire country).”

Time Out Chicago:

Hey, hey, hey! Why are you bringing us into this? What did we do?

Sure, we’ve got our share of math and orch-pop rockers, and okay, I’ll spot you a night here or there at the Empty Bottle as having air so thick with pretension that you expect the assembled crowd to to start making out with itself. But show me a local music scene that doesn’t have the same exceptions to a rule. Overall, Chicago has as much pretension as a beer fart.

And not for nothing, but as influential as Pitchfork is in the world of music criticism, I’ve never felt that they were particularly intrinsic to Chicago’s local music scene, aside from the obvious exception of its annual music festival in Union Park though even that has a national aim, and reach.

But Urb’s got to be a little touchy. If I lived in the metro area of Los Angeles/Beverly Hills and the most buzzworthy band my city had right now was Film School, I might start tossing around insults, too.

UPDATE: L.A. Weekly responds:

Jeezy creezy, man, can’t we all just take a jumbo bong hit, pop on a Tortoise album, listen to some tasty jerk-off-jazz-rock licks and take a little nappy-nap?

Jeeezus. Hasn't anyone realized that all of this is just giving even MORE attention to Mr. Aoki? burrrrrp!

It's amazing to see the success of one riding on the fact of him, well, just being so damn easy to make fun off. I saw him moshing around the DJ setup on stage once in Los Angeles as if it was a circle pit - shirt off of course. Oh, and the obligatory stage-dive. It's humoring, especially to see people clamoring at his defense.

ps The mix is indeed terrible. The songs are between 2 and 10 years old!

I've loved living here for the last few years excecpt for the lame ass music scene. If you don't like shitty indie rock, you're kind of screwed. And outside the small population of scene kids who are infatuated with themselves and their mediocre bands, there's an overwhelming air of apathy from the rest of the town, who's too busy watching the Cubs fail or whatever other sport is in season at the moment.

I miss real rock. I really do.

Man Steve, I'm with ya bro. What is up with rock. What happened to all the REAL rock bands like Zeppelin and Creed. It pisses me off so much, sometimes I just stare in the mirror and ask myself why. Why Steve?

uh, not really.

dude, say what you want about Creed but don't bring Zeppelin into this.

1. Since when was Chicago pretentious? Over LA especially??
2. Since when did anyone give such a massive shit over Aoki?
3. SINCE WHEN WAS CREED CONSIDERED A 'REAL' ROCK BAND??

arrgh i'm going to bed

Who the fuck is Steve Aoki and who gives a fuck? If he sounds anything like what the rest of this castrated garbage being pushed off as hip is ... let him sell his 10,000 units and be done with it.

When polyester shirts, B.O, plaid pants, white socks and buckle shoes get passed off as an artistic statement, I have to leave the room. For the most part all of these music rags suck the same set of unwashed nutsacks.

BitchFork is a joke. Give me a call when the next Public Enemy, KRS One or Digital Underground finally surfaces.

#9 sly stallone says:

look at what you started, TDS... shame ;)

an LA band called film school?... the name alone is enough to make me gag. the music lives up to that as well.

#10 urb sucks ass n ballz says:

josh glazer sent out an email to his freelance writers the other day asking if any of them could give at least a "semi-positive" review of the aoki album. talk about credibility!

#11 encased meat says:

Why is everyone talking about Weiner Circle and not Hot Dougs. Seriously!?

#12 Weiner and Still Champion says:

#11, you are right about Hot Doug's. Seriously.

#13 TeapChrick says:

Sly I think you missed the joke on the name Film School. From their MySpace page:

"A question we are often asked: Why the name "Film School?". The name came about as a play on the prescribed notions of what a kid from the suburbs can do if he/she wants to get into a creative career. The answers are something along the lines of: you can go to art school, you can go to film school, you can start a band, etc. So we started a band named Film School. (Note to young people: we highly do not recommend starting a band as a career)"

Seems like a funny commentary to me, doesn't have much to do with LA. Good band too.

#14 JMG says:

"Why is everyone talking about Weiner Circle and not Hot Dougs. Seriously!?"

Word.

#15 Chimusicguy says:

Seriously, did someone really write "where have all the real rock backs gone, like Zeppelin and CREED?" First off, it's complete blasphemy for you to even put those two words together in the same sentence. I just don't understand how one can even like both those bands. One, is the most amazing rock band there ever was or ever will be, and the other is everything that is wrong with rock. Because of bands like creed, rock has gone to where it is now. Scott stapp is the most pretentious, smarter than thou douche I have ever seen. He sings about his faith, God, how much he loves his family and how he's a such a good guy, and then gets into bar fights and makes sex tapes with strippers and kid rock, wtf. He is fake and so is his music. As for Aoki, who gives a shit. Chicago's music scene may be a little pretentious at times, but it's only because we DO have better music than you!
