Over the past few decades, the banjo has experienced a resurgence. Yesterday, it was associated with the stereotype of the frisky appalachian. Today, it’s the instrument of choice for the cool and cultured. And tomorrow, it will probably be featured prominently in an episode of Portlandia. Via The New York Times:

“I think a lot of the stereotypes cemented into place by movies like ‘Deliverance’ or television shows like ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’ or even ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ came from a very rural influence and sometimes a very derogatory influence. A lot of those imprints are older now.”
