Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, the new home of the partially Jay-Z-owned Brooklyn Nets, is also shaking up the city’s musical scene, drawing acts away from the heavily booked, expensive Madison Square Garden. Lady Gaga, Neil Young and Crazy Horse, Justin Bieber, Rihanna and Rush are all playing Barclays either in addition to or instead of the Garden in the next few months. Via New York Times:
“I consider it a godsend Barclays arena is there,” said Randy Phillips, the chief executive of AEG Live, one of the largest promoters in the country. “Prior to this we were really kind of held hostage on a tour to the availability of Madison Square Garden.”
The management at Madison Square Garden the same way established incumbents always do when challenged by a plucky, innovative young upstart.
“We always respect any competition, but the Garden will always be the Garden. We’ve been privileged to be at the center of New York City for more than 130 years, with 400 annual events, the most of any arena in the country. It’s the pinnacle of an artist’s career to play Madison Square Garden.”
