The BBC has apologized after following a news item about South African sprinter Oscar Pistorius – currently accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend – with Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe,” a song about a man who shoots his girlfriend. Via Gigwise:
However, following the news bulletin, they played 'Hey Joe’ – a track featuring lyrics about a man who shoots his girlfriend, which Pistorius has been accused of.
The song was originally recorded by The Leaves, but the station played the version recorded by The Jimi Hendrix Experience.
The lyrics are, “Hey Joe, where you going with that gun in your hand? I’m going out to shoot my old lady, you know I caught her messing around with another man.”
The DJ apologized immediately after the song was played. The BBC later issued a formal apology.
A BBC spokesperson said, “In light of the nature of the news story, we apologise for any offence caused by the proximity of the song 'Hey Joe’ to the bulletin.
