Legendary Queen guitarist Brian May has been at the forefront of a campaign to prevent a badger cull in the English countryside. Politicians from Gloucestershire and Somerset have been pushing for mass badgercide to keep the varmints from spreading tuberculosis to cattle. The bill to approve the cull was recently debated in the British Parliament. May had collected over 167,000 anti-cull signatures , but to no avail.
The badgerpocalypse will start this weekend. Via Gigwise:
“My initial reaction was sadness really, and a certain amount of frustration, obviously, and kind of despondency,” says May of the cull. “Everybody thought that because we won the debate (in the House of Commons), that the cull was off, but it’s not. It’s never been so. The government has never taken its foot off the pedal.
“I think it’s very, very sad… This is a tragedy for Britain’s wildlife… I think it’s disastrous and a tragedy.”
We’re really not sure what to make of this one.
