The Official Statement (from Girlie Action, The Cramps’ media representatives):

For Immediate Release:
February 4, 2009

Lux Interior, lead singer of The Cramps, passed away this morning due to an existing heart condition at Glendale Memorial Hospital in Glendale, California at 4:30 AM PST today. Lux has been an inspiration and influence to millions of artists and fans around the world. He and wife Poison Ivy’s contributions with The Cramps have had an immeasurable impact on modern music.

The Cramps emerged from the original New York punk scene of CBGB and Max’s Kansas City, with a singular sound and iconography. Their distinct take on rockabilly and surf along with their midnight movie imagery reminded us all just how exciting, dangerous, vital and sexy rock and roll should be and has spawned entire subcultures. Lux was a fearless frontman who transformed every stage he stepped on into a place of passion, abandon, and true freedom. He is a rare icon who will be missed dearly.

The family requests that you respect their privacy during this difficult time.

He will be sorely missed. Please share your thoughts and memories of Lux and The Cramps below.

An interview from the site State 151:

“We’re just people who remain ever-curious. We’re just attracted to whatever comes in handy. Again, like the Surrealists, anything you run across is actually beautiful; within a single city block, you find miraculous things. It’s a good planet—and good things can happen.”

An interview from Outside Left:

“Well the first time we stepped onstage at CBGBs we thought we were gonna do it once. We never thought about a second time, we were just thinking, ‘Let’s see if we get beat up or what happens.’ And ever since that night it’s been a million laughs. We still get up there and we get to play really loud, there’s all these people screaming at you, there’s flashing lights in your face…I can’t think of any other way to make a living. It’s all we know now.”

An interview with Belgian e-zine Dreun:

“The song is NOT about Elvis; it’s about Lux, the true King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.”

And some more incredible music…

IMDB:

Erick Lee Purkhiser, better known as his stage name Lux Interior was born on October 21st, 1948 in Stow, Ohio. He grew up enamored with the culture of the 1950s. In particular he loved Rockabilly music, EC Horror comic books and B-movies. As a child he was drawn to the antics of the early 60s Cleveland horror host Goulardi, whose rebellious act and off-color jokes would earn him much scorn from the local PTA. Purkhiser later joked that Goulardi was so popular the crime rate went down when he was on because everyone was watching his show. In 1972 in Sacramento he met his soul mate; a fellow fan of Alice Cooper, LSD, record collecting and B-movies known as Kristy Wallace, better known as Poison Ivy. According to legend he picked her up while she was hitch-hiking. After discovering just how similar they were the two moved back to Ohio in 1973 and later to New York City in 1975. Influenced by the burgeoning punk scene in New York with bands like The New York Dolls and The Ramones setting the standard the two decided they would start their own punk rock band, The Cramps.

In contrast to other punk bands at the time however, they also mixed a heavy dose of Rockabilly and B-movie imagery to form their own unique image. It was during this time that Purkhiser took the stage name Lux Interior, taking his name from a car advert. He also created a unique stage personia, one of a complete honky tonky punk wild man, or as one reviewer put it “the psychosexual werewolf/ Elvis hybrid from hell”. The genre they helped create was later known as “Psychobilly” even though Interior denies that that is what their music really is. In 1978 The Cramps showed the world just how deep their love for the weird and the off beat went when they gave a free concert to the patients at the Nappa Valley State Mental Institution. The next year The Cramps released their first official EP, “Gravest Hits”. That same year they released their first LP, “Songs the Lord Taught Us”. In 1985 The Cramps were able to perform one original song for Dan O’Bannon’s classic horror-comedy zombie flick The Return of the Living Dead with the song “Surfin’ Dead”. Although he and Ivy are the only two constant members of The Cramps line up the band still continues to tour to this day, giving fans much joy and fun, reminding them of the power of rock and roll.

This is so sad. He was a great showman with the world's best sense of humor. He also was one of the nicest guys I have ever met. Joe Shanahan had them play at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago and I was fortunate enough to be hired to DJ at the club before they came on. I remember it was the middle of the afternoon and Lux, wearing really big high heels, got out of his ride with Poison Ivy and took the time to talk to everyone gathered there. I will treasure every memory of every show that I saw them perform over the years!

#2 kopper says:

Odd that this is the only place on the Web where anyone can find this news. I hope it's not true! Lux was a huge influence on me. RIP, Lux. You may be gone, but you'll never be forgotten.

#10 Justine says:

I can't believe this is true. I just CAN NOT believe it. I have been so fortunate to see the Cramps over the years...as recently as just over a year ago. They STILL put on an amazing and fabulous show after all these years. If this is true, I am desolate.

My heart goes out to Poison Ivy.

#11 Turd Ferguson says:

Why is there no other information about this out there? The Cramps site says nothing, and all that Google news results bring up is a ton of stuff about Volkswagen upholstery. Seems odd that there is no other mention of it.... Please let this just be a bad rumor!

#12 dubious until otherwise says:

If it's true, cite a source. It may very well be right but you need to show that's the case.

#13 diskgrinder says:

grew up with this music in the early 80s - guana bats, meteors, sid presley experience, the very things, the cravats - all that psychobilly noise. All gone now. Sad day. Peppermint Lounge red vinyl.

#18 Lili says:

This is sad sad news if it is true. I had the pleasure of working with Lux on our animated feature LOS CAMPEONES DE LA LUCHA LIBRE (www.loscampeones.net, screening tomorrow night in L.A.). Lux was the voice of RAYO X, a skeleton-suit wearing masked wrestler.

Rock N Roll is truly dead. R.I.P. Lux Interior

#25 Stevie says:

I saw The Cramps play on a beach cliff behind a mansion in Cleveland, at some rich kid's party July 4, 1978. At one point Lux jumped off the cliff (the audience was down on the beach looking up) but instead of crashing at our feet he fell into a briar patch about halfway down. The band kept playing, natch, and the audience was freaking. Finally there was a rustle in the briars and Lux slowly came clawing out on all fours, onto the beach, scratched all to hell and bloody ... still singing. It was "TV Set" btw. Pere Ubu had to follow that.

#26 VIC says:

I saw the Cramps last at the Sunset Junction street fair a couple of years back. I made my way through the crowd to the front and put my arm forward towards him. I grabbed him by the wrist while he was singing and held on to him for a while thinking "thanks for all your great music." LUX did not pull back or seem annoyed. He just let me hold him for a bit and then I let go. I hope he understood what I was trying to tell him.

#27 cleveland says:

man,
hope it's not true, but everyone's gotta go sooner or later. the band was a giant inspiration to me. lux and ivy came into my store last time through and i nearly peed myself. lux and company will be truly missed. i blame him for my ghoulardi obsession. bryan gregory, another wonderful soul who i had the chance to hang out with after "the beast" when he lived here is constantly a person on my mind as well. thanks foe the mammories. stay sick.

#28 DJ Di of WLUW says:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! I wish I'd seen this sooner! Razor played them on his WLUW show today. I can't believe this! What an entertainer! What a unique individual! There will never be another like Lux! Long live my memories of The Cramps! There is a Lux-sized hole in my heart, never to be filled by anyone else.

#37 debkakes says:

Saw The Cramps Halloween 1981 (or '82 or '83 -- who remembers, it WAS v. much the 80's) at the Peppermint Lounge in NYC, and it was an amazing show. Lux was the very definition of a frontman, fearless and insanely talented. Loved The Cramps, mourn his passing.

#38 Neil says:

Oh, wow, this is indeed sad. Lux was such an amazing performer and The Cramps are amazing. I've spent many hours enjoying their music. RIP, Lux. Good to know some part of him will always be with us every time we play their songs.

My sympathy to Poison Ivy, and all his family and friends.

Cheers.

#39 Maldoror says:

You guys have handled this story very poorly. No source on the original report. No source on the press release. C'mon, this is serious business and you're working this story like amateurs. Even your site is crashing today. Get it together, people!

#40 Philip says:

Girlie Action's website does not list the Cramps or Lux as clients.

#41 cleveland says:

oh man, i hope he's pulling an elvis on us.
in a time of such drivel like "american idol" and the rock and roll hall of fame, i find refuge in knowing a band like the cramps exist. the cramps are the cramps, so many classic albums, maybe a dud here or there. to me they were the ultimate in every way.

#42 ted says:

I spoke with Aleix Martinez of Girlie Action and he confirmed it.

A very sad day. The Halloween Peppermint Lounge show of the early 80s still ranks up there as one of my all time favorite.

#44 Donna says:

Is this true because he's already faked his death before.
Should we being to pass this message around?
Who do we believe at this moment?

Donna

#45 Red says:

There will never be another Lux or another band like the Cramps. R.I.P.

#46 Christopher says:

This has hit me like a ton of bricks. God this sucks. What a cool, cool musician. My heart goes out to his wife and family. The Cramps were a band that were always around, always perking me up when I needed it. May he rest in peace. sigh...

#47 Kati says:

I just got a second source. I am afraid it is true. Billboard online has it too. I am so sad.

#48 Larry says:

I knew him. A nice guy and great musician. Farewell Lux.

#50 Tammy says:

Wow! What a drag. My condolescenes to Ivy.

#51 Janet says:

My stomach sunk, I am very sad- I will have to go and find some photos I took of him from years ago. He'll be missed. My first Cramps show was when I was 16 and I will never forget what an amazing performer Lux remained for decades to follow. RIP, and my condolences to Poison Ivy and his loved ones.

#52 thom says:

tv set...the greatest song ever

#53 Jonas says:

My band of all time...i'm actually in tears. I got "Songs the Lord Taught Us" when I was 12 and got every album they ever made. Lux flung some of his nut sweat from his latex g string at a show in Sacramento. Hit me righ in the face. Awesome.

#54 steve says:

rock'n'roll has lost a genuine legend and one of the most awesome stage personas it was ever my good fortune to see:( if it's true it's a truly sad day for music!!!

RIP lux

#55 David Harris says:

Boans Warehouse, East Perth. On his hands and knees, wearing the gold lame g-string with little black girl's shoes and white frilly socks, crawling along the front of the stage, tongue-kissing the audience. There will be no other...

Sympathy to PI...rock and roll will never die

#56 Jay says:

Wow....this is a terrible loss...I am very upset that I never got a chance to see the Cramps live. I had a chance to see them about 10 years ago, but could not. I thought I would get a chance to see them again...Guess I was wrong. Hopefully Posion Ivy will be ok....RIP Lux. We'll miss you....

#57 Lisa says:

Saw the Cramps twice in London, they were so fab. Still have all their albums on vinyl. Sad news

#58 BELLA says:

R.I.P LUX! FOREVER MISSED!!

#59 Steve Metz says:

Lux and Ivy had the biggest effect on my life after seeing their photo in Rock Scene I went up to NYC to check them out and I was blown away. I saw the band and they were every thing I dreamed about in a rock and roll band. I may have seen the band over 40 times. I had the good luck to build Ivy a guitar and had them over my house and had lunch with them. They were the nicest people you ever could meet. I will miss Lux and thanks for saving my life. I can't envision a world where the Cramps never existed.

#60 Paul Feldman says:

One of my favourite bands of all time.
"The rock and roll daddy has done passed on, but his bones'll keep rockin' long after he's gone - rock on!"

#61 mark & trish says:

Lux soldiered on quietly with a heart condition like brave hearted Mickey Rouke in The Wrestler. We saw every Cramps show they performed over the last 17 years here in San Francisco and 10 years before that in Boston. Every show was the best. Our hearts are heavy and oh so SAD. Our sincerest condolences to Queen Ivy. Long live the Queen.

#62 Johan says:

He was a man outside of time. a savior,
a true leader, the bearer of something precious.

#63 Esmerelda says:

I saw them in Dallas in 1991. I got hugged, serenaded and a concussion. It was awesome. One of a kind. My condolences Ivy. He will be missed.

#64 Elise says:

Just so, so, sad. The Cramps were such an integral part of a really hard time in my life, their music was the soundtrack that played through these ups and downs. I will always fondly remember their live shows.

#65 Anthony Mancino says:

Lux (I think you can hear me now), you and Ivy are what made me want to become a musician. Your music brought me closer to members of my family than and kind blood relation could ever do.

Ivy. Please accept my deepest condolences to you and your family for your loss.
I am completely heartbroken and my love is with you all.

#66 Joe Warghoul Cole says:

He will truly be missed, amazing performer, he can never be replaced, and was an inspiration to us all.

#67 Virginia says:

His voice helped shape my world...heart of green, broken.

#68 Vic says:

The single best show of my little 20 year old life and the grandaddy of them all. Cramps, LA, circa 1984-1985, Palladium, amazing show, mad fistfights inside and riot police waiting for us outside. We gave them what they came for, and my love for the Cramps was beaten into me. RIP Lux and mad heart condolences to Poison Ivy and all of his.

#69 Prolitariat says:

Lux made a mockery of the devil.
Long live the Queen.

There's no shortage of Lux lyrics to eulogize, so keep em coming.

#70 Pat Cronin says:

I saw The Cramps in Chicago too in about 1983-84 but I don't think it was at Cabaret Metro it was at a smaller place where I had previously seen Altered Images and Echo and The Bunnymen (on their first 80's show in Chicago, the 2nd being at the Bismark Theatre) but anyway I really took all Lux's advice to heart. When he said don't eat stuff off the sidewalk it seemed to be good advice and not just sillyness and I love and I live Primitive thanks to The Cramps. Thanks for all the cool rock coolness and love to Poison Ivy.

So sorry to hear the news and to find out that someone with such a big heart died of heart problems- those damn hearts, I know they can be problems, I have been plagued with palpitions for about the last three years and it's just crap to have to deal with.

So sad

love

Pat

#75 Mr Mezola says:

Huge influence to me in my life and music, he will be gravely missed. Condolences to the family.

#76 S Bonilla says:

Lux and Ivy popped in a few times at my and Tom Darling's record store in Sacramento, The Record Connection. They probably actually spent money at Ed Hartman's much larger RECORDS store on the K Street mall. Lux was Vip Vop, then. Later, in the early 80's I ran into them a couple of times at Hollywood garage sales and at the grocery store at Fountain and La Brea. Thanks for the music. Thanks for the memories. RIP Lux.

#77 Michele says:

Thank you, Lux . . . you've given us so much. You will be missed. Wish I had a chance to see those photos you took of me at the Garage in LA, years ago! Thought you were sneakin' around, huh? I saw ya snappin' them off, as you followed Ivy around!

#78 Pablo Mago says:

I never got to see The Cramps but I heard so many great stories about the band and always loved Ivy's interviews in guitar magazines. I just can't imagine a world without them. So sad.

#79 Tom Price says:

Saw the Cramps many times, toured with them in the late 90's as opening act, had the thrill of getting to know them personally. Lux was grouchy, irritable, impatient, and grim; also funny, considerate, and kind. In other words, he was REAL. A 100% authentic rock'n'roll maniac. My sadness at hearing of his death is surpassed only by the joy of having lived on the same planet as this great Master-King-Hero of Rock'n'Roll!

#80 Brandon (Canada) says:

I saw them Halloween 2006 one of there last shows ever I'm 17 and that was the best night of my life there music will live on through me for sure. He was the best at what he did and I'm thankful I got to see them atleast once

#82 shaun hamontree says:

he was a maverick of my time. he will be sorely missed

#83 Professor Greg says:

The first time I saw The Cramps I drove 2 hours in a blizzard from Worcester to Boston. The show was sold out but the door guy let me slip him a $20 bill with my i.d. and pretended to find my name on the guest list. I only caught their last two songs and the encore, but it was so worth it! I am so sad I will never see them again.

#84 C. Eden says:

Such a drag. I saw the Cramps every time they played Boston in the 80's. The shows were amongst the most insane I ever attended. Pure Rock 'N' Roll voodoo.

#85 Lesley says:

I just died!

#86 Lamar S. says:

Man, I can't believe it, first it was Betty Page, then Bob Wilkins & now Lux...No more CRAMPS..it's becoming a very BORING world. The CRAMPS have always been my favorite band. Lux was as great a showman as Iggy; writhing around on the stage & climbing on the monitors. Today's youth has nothing compared to this campy GREAT music/show (except maybe EL-VEZ). Halloween will never be the same, they played every year in S.F. until recently. I'm sad for Poison Ivy, but mAybe she'll carry on & continue bringing us some punk-psychobilly. I've read the posting & people can't believe it's true because this is the only place it's posted. I recall when Johnny Thunders died there was NO PRESS on him.

#87 Caprice says:

Lux, baby, you and Ivy gave the best shows EVER. I'll miss you.

Here I am, stuck on earth...not eating stuff off the sidewalk. I hope Ivy will be OK.

#88 Bamboo Ben says:

Tear it up!!!!!

#89 Onesadfan says:

This is terrible, what the hell am I going to listen to now? I've been a huge fan for over 20 years. Without a doubt my favorite concerts, Lux was a great showman. My condolences to Ivy, I'm so sorry.

This is a sad day for music and the world in general. They shaped and formed me in my teenage years. Freaks and Sex and fucking rock and roll. I saw them 6 times. Every time it was amazing. We've lost a true original and an extraordinary performer. They sure don't make 'em like they used to. "I Ain't Nuthin' But a Gorehound" forever. My deepest sympathy to Poisin Ivy.

Just remember how few people in their lifetimes do have the courage to actually LIVE. That man LIVED every moment of his life. RIP LUX.

#93 Rob Filardo says:

booked the Cramps a few years ago here in Rochester and got to open for them, which was cool. Cooler still was Lux & Ivy visiting the record store i worked at the next day and buying a shitload of records. Big music fans were they. I feel bad for Ivy.

#94 Sam Williams Australian 55yrs Bali Indonesia says:

Death of a legend..Sad !....One of thee absolute greats. The Cramps music changed my life. Saw them live in Australia 86 and unfortunately never had the pleasure again....but have played their grooves almost every single day for 22 years, since !

RIP Lux !

#95 3rd Degree Burns says:

Wow..I'm still stunned. The last truley great rock and roll frontman is gone. I feel fortunate to have met and talked to Lux and Ivy and shared a stage with the Cramps a few times. They definitely are the main reason I picked up a guitar in the first place. There will never be another band like them. My deepest sympathy goes out to Ivy. I'm so sorry.. I know its gonna be tough times without your soulmate. Hang in there.... I just want you to know how much you two have meant to me and how much you impacted my life.

#100 Yves S says:

This is so sad. He really wasn't too old and he and Ivy were vegetarians, weren't they? He was so amazing and such a huge influence on me in so many ways. This is so sad and really shocking. I have a cool story...

I have a friend who was in a sorta big New Wave band in the late 70s who was performing in LA in the late 90s. Lux and Ivy started going to a few of her shows and would sit in the back of the bar like they wanted their privacy.

They befriended my friend and invited her to their home and took her out to Hollywood Forever Cemetary and Lux filmed her and Ivy on an old Super 8 camera while they posed next to tombstones. They invited her band to open for their Halloween gig and my friend said that they were the nicest people and very sweet and had amazing memorabilia.

My heart really goes out to Ivy because I think those two were inseparable and such an amazing duo.

The Cramps are still horribly underrated even though I know they have a devoted following. We'll not see a band nearly as great as them and we'll not see a performer as wild as Lux Interior... a true rock'n'roll legend.

#101 Mark Tharme says:

They broke the mold when Lux was born and drove over it with a zombie driven dune buggy from Memphis. He has been such a huge influence on so many musicians and bands. An original. A pioneer. And now a legend.

#102 93hertz says:

Nooooooo!!!!! I can't even begin to describe the depravity and abandon enjoyed at any Cramps show...Not to mention all the parties and clubs with their tunes...I'm really going to miss them...I'm going to miss the whole scene, who else could gather that unique set together again? I could go to a hundred Cramps shows and they would all be good...Crap!

#103 Annaconda says:

Lux, showman, voodoo shaman, lover of life and the Primitive, wantin' to know 'What's inside a girl', bringing so much of real life and love and live, baby, live dang the good ones leave us. Love to Ivy and familia, we are a community and we all feel this loss with you. Love and more love, Annaconda

#112 tom h says:

God bless the Cramps. Smooth sailing, Lux ... I hope to catch another show further on up the road.

#113 RazorDevil says:

Awful.....just awful. Lux and The Cramps were a huge influence on me very early on in life and still remain so to this day. They were one of the first to show me just how incredible music can be. You can't even really put a lable on what The Cramps really are in my book, so why bother. Fangs for all the memories Lux, hope your having a grand time of it on the other side. The world just seems a whole lot less fun without you, and my heart goes out to Ivy and the rest of the family

#114 DJ High Yellow says:

I saw the Cramps several times, my favorite show was in Baltimore (in 1997?) with the Bomboras opening. Anybody remember what club that was at?

Thank you Lux for 30 plus years of great music. You will be missed.

#116 dave c says:

I had the great pleasure to work with The Cramps when they first came/went to Britain probably 1979.They supported the Police on their first headline tour.
Great band. Charming people.

#117 Roggie says:

This was so beautifully written and really took me back to seeing him on those stages, He will be missed and was so special, Ivy will have to be so strong but she is blessed from the creations they made together.

#118 pabloli says:

I'm gonna dig up the old vinyl from the 80s, plug in my turntable and blast the Cramps! RIP Lux. Our condolences to Ivy...

#119 Tom vonspatula says:

RIP Lux. You gave me wings to sing. You will be missed. Forever Cramped.

#120 DTease says:

Sorry folks. Read the news in Billboard earlier. A true original. First show, Tuts in Chicago 83, last Marquee in Phx 03. (i think). Best interview, Incredibly Strange Music Vol.1 check it if you can. DONT DISAPPEAR IVY.

#121 megan marie says:

i am imeasurable sad. they were my favorite and i never got to see them! He will be sadly missed!

#122 Dave says:

Can't forget those 3 nights in a row at the Lyceum in London, February 1985. The Cramps were on fire.

Never saw them live after 1989 but still enjoy their music today. And I am still passing their stuff down to teenagers, who think it is cool but had never heard of them.

Their influence went FAR beyond their sales.

Personally, they taught me so much about great, unheralded rockabilly - and trashy psychedelic punk from the mid-60s.

Condolences to Ivy and other loved ones.

#123 Alicia says:

I'm heartbroken

#124 Kevin Barber says:

Great talent - another loss to be replaced by a souless machine with tits.

#125 Dez says:

This is very sad news. The Cramps have been huge influence for me in more ways than one. During one Cramps show that we saw here in New Orleans, Lux climbed on top of the PA speakers towards the end of the show. As he reached up for the balcony railing above his head, he got his grip, but lost his footing & was just kind of hanging there, shit out of luck. It was the only time I've ever seen Ivy crack a smile on stage. We laughed our asses off, which was cool, as the rest of the time our jaws were on the floor.

My heart goes out to Ivy, I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope that you can find some comfort in the fact that Lux and the Cramps have given so many of us what no one else could, or ever will. R.I.P. Lux, and thank you for giving your all.

#126 jack says:

Very sad loss. What a showman and serious freak.

#127 Christo Mephisto says:

I remember seeing the Cramps w/ They Might Be Giants, of all people, at Artemus Ham Hall, of all venues, here in Las Vegas. Lux writhed around onstage, TMBG formed a conga line...it was good. And zany. And I'll miss Lux quite a bit, because although there have been and will continue to be so many imitators, and even a genre formed from their style of Horror-punk-a-billy...it's just never going to be the same. R.I.P. Lux. I hope they bury you w/ that mic deep in yr throat, as it was in life.

#128 David Jenkins says:

Kristy, first of all my most heartfelt best wishes to you, dear lady.

And to Lux, a tip of the hat and my endless gratitude for all the great songs, the brilliant lyrics, the hilariously outrageous performances, the unforgettable nights.

You didn't have to be a punk obsessive to know that the Cramps were and forever will remain, by any measure, one of the truly, truly great American rock and roll bands. If there's ever been a better rockabilly album than "Stay Sick" I've never heard it.

Total pro. Total original. We shall never see his like again. And I just can't believe that I'll never see the Cramps again. Breaks my rock and roll heart. It really does.

#129 b says:

me n a saw them at avalon. it was such a good show. we kinda looked like them you know lux and ivy and it was all cute in a punk rock love kinda way.

i had a great time.

#130 steeldrivingman says:

I can't hardly believe that an icon like Lux is gone from us. I am just an average working joe and I recognize the great gift he has shared with me. When I have been stressed, lonely, etc, etc. I have got in my car and listened to the Cramps. I saw you a few years back and I reached up, onto the stage, and slapped your ass maybe a little harder than you cared for. Sorry about that. I just got carried away with the show. I hope you are well in the afterlife. Thank you for all the company you have kept with me.

#131 vELVetIcuS says:

I was just thinking the other day, they should be touring around again soon. I loved The Cramps. I am truly sad.

#132 Seattle Cramps Fan says:

I discovered the Cramps when I was in High School around 1990, and immediately fell in love with them. Everytime they came through town, I was amazed by the incredible show that they would put on. I would always dress to impress and one of the highlights in my life was being able to go backstage and actually meet them after a show. All I did was kiss Poison Ivy's boots. Lux you will be missed and loved forever, RIP, and my heart goes out to you poison. But thank you for your contribution to rockabilly and music history. I will always love your music....

#141 Waldow says:

Best fucking! Really #1 Living shows! YES!

#142 Matt Holland UK says:

That is really bad news, ruined my day.....
I first saw the original line up with Gregory in 1980 at The Daze Of Future Past Gig at Leeds Queens' Hall (UK). They headlined Wall Of Voodoo, Thompson Twins, Echo/Bunnymen, Altered Images and a whole host of other bands...The Cramps were on the Sunday and the whole audience was electric, loving their show..
I've seen The Cramps around 25 times in the UK since that date and they were the forerunners of B-Movie horror Rock N Roll, preceding all the goth bands that popped up in the late 70's early 80's - no other artist came close to their music and shows, I can not believe Lux has gone, I have many fond memories of his antics and pummelling vocal delivery, climbing up stacks and eating light filters, twirling umbrella's round his groin whilst naked, writhing around on the floor, sweat pouring out of the arms of his vinyl jump suit and of course screaming Surfin' Bird at the audience whilst holding a broken champagne bottle neck in his mouth.....
I had the pleasure of meeting Lux, somewhat briefly in London a few years ago, outside the stage entrance of The Astoria Ballroom, Ivy was in the limo, and Lux was just getting in, I told him how much I'd enjoyed the show again, dropped a few gigs to him, and his reply was, "Hey, we're all in it together, the UK rocks, have a great night"....he duly signed my copy of a Legion fanzine, slapped me on the arm and got in the limo.....what a sad shame, there'll be no other Lux Interior he was a briliant showmaster and I for one will miss the Cramps, without Lux there is no Cramps..RIP Lux..
Matt

#144 Mick from 99th says:

I was first introduced to The Cramps when I saw them open up for The Talking Heads at The Aragon Ballroom in Chicago in 1979(?). The Talking Heads fans hated them with a passion and were throwing things at them and booing them off the stage. I didn't know what to make of them because their set barely lasted 20 minutes and it consisted of Lux Interior rolling around on the floor like he was passing a kidney stone with the mic in his mouth howling. Through out the set a roadie kept running out and tuning Brian Gregory's guitar adding to the chaos on stage. Their finale was when a very obnoxious drunk Talking Heads fan (female) on some guys shoulders who was yelling "get off the stage!" so Lux shoved her and she toppled backwards like 150 lbs of shit falling off the back of a pickup truck and then they were gone...We were stunned and impressed because we knew we had just witnessed something we didn't have a name for yet. Up to that time we called what we were into Voodoobilly or Gravedigger and it was a mix of New York Punk, rockabilly, Dead Elvis, The Munsters, Black leather, black lace, pompadours, fishnets, 50's cars with fins, and S&M fashion. 20 years later, my friend Sean aka "Ref Raf" brought The Cramps by my store 99th Floor and I finally got to meet them in person and they were the nicest coolest people you ever want to meet. Sometimes when you finally meet your idols you are gravely disappointed-not The Cramps! Lux got a pair of knee high Latex fetish boots in his size and Ivy got a pair of flamed pvc hot pants later immortalized in the live photo of Ivy in Big Beats from Badville. I am greatly saddened by the death of Lux Interior, he was a huge inspiration and he will be greatly missed! Rest In Peace Lux Interior. Our deepest condolences to Ivy.

#145 abe dunovits (perth, western australia) says:

Lux was such an inspiration as a performer and creator of the coolest, rawest music with soul...there arent many performers like that anymore that can inspire such awe live and be truly dangerous....i had the priviledge of seeing the Cramps when they performed in Perth, Western Australia, and when he got close to the front audience where i was, he let me squeeze his nipple...he was wearing a latex top...that is my sweet memory of that gig and the fantastically cool music produced by the band...rest in peace lux interior....may your lux shine forever in the hearts and souls of the people who are lucky enough to discover the Cramps.....

#148 HorribleHarry says:

I'll never forget Oct 30 2002 Ventura ca. Lux took a moment to tell us what was on TV that night... He reminded us we were all missing Dr. Quinn, medecine woman for that nights show, amongst others as he tore pages from the TV guide. It was so funny to think of that.
In all seriousness Thank you Erick, you made it fun to listen to music again.

#149 Emily Marilyn says:

#155 Rev. Feedback of BLAQ MUMMY says:

I am gonna go out and kick Mr. Death's ass for doing this and I am gonna use a theremin to do it.

The Cramps were one of the best things ever about American rock music. And to me personally they started my discovery of all the great music that never gets played on commercial radio, and therefore the discovery of the other side of life besides what is forcefed to us, and in that way the Cramps changed my life immensely.

Lux Interior. Honor him. Let's Rock.

#156 Michael the joan of arc family says:

I am totally saddened by this loss. The Cramps changed my life for the better, and gave me so much positivity in very very dark times. Their ethic and ethos on life and how to live was never preachy, it was led by example. If you play with fire you will get burned .. obviously. And, so what? I will continue living my life how I want as much as I can, and Lux and Ivy are very much to thank for this in no small way. My love and feeling for Ivy at this sad time. I love you so much too sweetheart, and always thank you! Michael x

I'll never forget when my baby-sitter turned me on to the Cramps.
They were pretty much my favorite band instantly.
I had to wait almost 5 years to see them because they so-so rarley played all ages shows, then they played 3 that year.
The last time I saw them was Halloween of 2006.
I'm really crushed right now.

I will sorely miss the prescence of Lux Interior . I saw the Cramps once at the Warner Theater in Wasington,DC with the Butthole Surfers in 1988. Im so glad I did. Music is a little less beautiful today without him around.

#163 Ratfink- Ex Alien sex fiend says:

My hero!! loved this man like my dad! sadly missed, thoughts go out to Ivy and his family. The king is dead long live the king,Rockin Bones!

#164 Rumpo Kid says:

The last few times The Cramps were in London they played The Astoria, a nice and grimey Victorian venue, where your feet stuck to the floor, ie perfect for Lux, Ivy & Co. This venerable old venue had now held it’s last show and is due to be demolished.
I’ll miss it, but not half as much as I’ll miss Mr.Interior. The Cramps have been the only band to have stayed with me since the 80’s, first time I saw em’ was Portsmouth Guildhall. The world, suddenly feels a lot less fun, Rock & Roll is (un)dead.

#165 JD says:

Sadly it's confirmed on other sources now. I never got to see the Cramps, another regret to chalk up.

#167 Hynesie says:

This morning I heard on BBC 6 music about Lux's death. I am 37 now and I only got into them about nine years ago when I got 'Off the Bone' and then later 'Fiends of Dope Island', and The Cramps have been firm favourites of mine since, and I have pretty much all their tunes.
I was lucky enough to see The Cramps live in London a couple of years ago and have been looking forward to seeing them again. I am deeply saddened by Lux's death but it is a bitter-sweet feeling because I think of him and his songs and his wicked humour and it makes me think we are just lucky we had him around.
Lux, profound thanks for the great tunes, the musical inspiration, and for making me laugh and dance. Martin Hynes

#184 Eric says:

The Cramps are severely underrated. Not just musically, where they reworked basic R'n'R into a nasty bizaroo-bash that still influences, but they influenced pop culture in so many ways, fashion, kitsch/vinatge culture and design, and much more. But just because they didn't have a top 40 hit, they're "cult." But NEVER underestimate what that crazed b*st*rd did for fine trash aesthetes everywhere. thanks, Lux!!!! R.I.P.

This just kills me!! My favourite band of ALL TIME!!! I shed tears when I heard the devastating news today. I don't wanna believe it!!!! I was so incredibly lucky to have seen them twice in australia. The last time being in '95. I waited 12 long years for them to come back....they never did. So I went to them! 2 years ago I couldn't stand it anymore and HAD to see them before it was too late!! So a girlfriend and I went on a whirlwind Cramps tour! We flew from Melbourne to San Fran to see them play their 30th anniversary at the Filmore on Halloween (of course)AWESOME!!!! then saw them in Las Vegas, then again in L.A. at DISNEYLAND!!! Bizarre but fabulous!! All in 4 nights! They were as fantastic as they were in '95!! Ivy how the FUCK do you continue to look so damn good?!!! THANKYOU SO MUCH FOR THE CRAMPS!!!
NOTHING picks me up like listening to THE CRAMPS!! SO influential!! SO FUN!!! LUX AND IVY I LOVE YOU!!
I still have one of Lux's sweat soaked pvc gloves from the last time they played Australia. Lux threw it to me after having me in a head lock....pure rocknroll bliss!! Ivy PLEASE don't stop playing!! We need you more than ever now!!!

#192 Dan O'Bannon says:

I send my condolences to the family, friends and fans of Lux Interior and the Cramps. Erick and Kristy's contributions to my film "Return of the Living Dead" added greatly to the film's decades-long success.

Erick was a true-to-himself artist. That's a rare commodity and grants him a certain immortality and influence over the future, which is a great tribute to his life and work.

Sorry to see him go.

#194 Carroll says:

RIP Lux Interior! I've still got the early Cramps stuff on vinyl, I've been listening to them that long. Truly a different band, he and Poison Ivy made punk/rockabilly into something new and crazy, and the free concert at the Napa Valley MI was an absolute classic. It's a shame that innovators seem to flame out way too early, but I guess brighter flames burn faster...

#195 Rev. Frost says:

Ah FUCK!!! The Cramps taught me/us so much...

#197 Johnny Pepper says:

THE Cramps with LUX up front were unique and beyond genre. He was just one hell of a performer. THeir shows over the years were absolutely amazing (I cant count how many times I sawthem and sad to think I wont see them again)and Lux always gave 200% and that from the very depths of his heart, soul and groin. He was a beautiful human being, an amazing artist and a great lover of music. All those "songs the Cramps taught us" ... Where the heck would psychobilly or any of us be without them. Rest in Peace, beautiful soul.

#198 Krom says:

He was the ultimate rocker on earth. He was like a god and a close friend to me. He was a good and nice person. He changed my life in 1979 when i first met him in Brussels. I miss you a lot Lux. I was just talking to someone last night about the Cramps at Generation Records here in NYC--- about Songs the Cramps Taught Us!. When I heard Gravest Hits back in 1980 it made me a life long Cramps fan. It's a very sad day in RnR.

Sorry for your loss Ivy!

#200 tnhillbilly says:

Thank you Lux for everything. You will be dearly missed and are irreplaceable. Rest in Peace.

#201 Maxwell says:

I remember seeing Lux stepping out of his red Miata wearing matching red stiletto pumps on his way to shop at Retail Slut. He and Ivy used to buy Lux's skinny black jeans that he wore and ripped to shreds on stage at the shop I worked in on Melrose Ave. in Hollywood. They must have weakened the jean's seams before each show cuz they always fell apart on cue. We used to have their home phone number so we could call them when a shipment of the jeans Lux liked came in. They were always very nice. I have his signature n his real name on an American Express charge slip. I saw them perform many times and they always blew me away, even their later shows, which I didn't really have high expectations for. Silly me! I should have known Lux would give his all!

#202 JB from GA says:

it all comes back to where the sickness started. there is something in the water here in northeast ohio, but it spawned greats such as lux interior, nick and ike knox, ghoulardi, deadboys, devo, pere ubu, and even dorothy fuldheim and jefferey dahmer. bryan gregory even tasted the waters. in mid march, a tribute/memorial show is being set up complete with bands playing songs the cramps taught us. cramps covers or just inspired. night will be complete with dj's and horror movies. i am currently looking for a few bands to join. would love to have the sickids or the fuzztones, but if you can point some people my way it would be appreciated. stay sick, turn blue, scratch glass.

#209 Eric Olsen says:

A very charismatic and terrific showmen is gone. I'm sad, yet also happy to know his rock n' roll contributions were many. As far as lead vocalists go I think he goes right up there with the best of em', even if the Cramps were somewhat underground. I'm mostly sad for Poison Ivy, having just lost her musical soul-mate.

#210 Tim Duyka says:

"What I don't know can never hurt me"; now I that I know Lux is gone, it hurts.

The upside is that the Psychobilly Afterlife just got hotter...Lux made "one big greasefire outta this" world and by so doing created an appreciation for the "Primitive" in us all encouraging a delusional world to stay sick...so today I "feel like [I've] been hit by a truck, but", and in keeping with his legacy, "let's get fucked up".

Poison Ivy, this fan's love is thrown out to you in appreciation for all the times you and Lux made me forget the world by diving with The Cramps into the "surrealist bucket" that was every show I saw. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

#211 Anna Chronica says:

I saw the Cramps several times, and every show was a wonderful, surreal, hilarious, great time. I'm really sad to hear that he's gone. :(

#212 dimitris k says:

Saw them two nights in a row at the Rodon club in Athens, Greece in 1991. According to Lux these were propably the most dangerous and exciting shows they ever did.

Lux completely trashed the place, breaking the wooden floor with his mic stand and pulled out the wires beneath the stage! He climbed a very high wall of speakers and pulled a Tarzan stunt on us using the stage curtain, jumping to the other side on top of another other wall of speakers! He also burned a bag of weed inside the ventilation system of the club!

Unfortunately there's no vids of this show available on the net and the only thing that tops this gig from what i've seen on youtube is the live at the Napa State Mental Hospital for obvious reasons...

Went to see the Cramps many, many times in NYC during the 80's -- The Peppermint lounge (where they would let a live bat out before they got on stage) -- pumping the theme from the Twilight Zone over the house speakers before coming out on stage -- giving a fucking wild performance everytime they hit the stage. Lux you were great and will be missed.

#214 amy from Detroit says:

Christ Almighty! Detroit (and the world) is still reeling from the recent passing of Ronnie Asheton of The Stooges, and now THIS! I am just ridiculously sad! I was just listening to The Cramps yesterday and was wondering when the hell they were going to tour again. Ugh! What an enormous loss! Oh my darling Poison Ivy, my heart goes out to you!

#215 Thea says:

Great band, super nice guy. He will be missed.

#216 Nick says:

My wife and I's "song" (as in "They're playing our song") is "You've Got Good Taste". The Cramps were literally the soundtrack to our courtship, and we didn't miss a single Cramps show in California (no matter where) for years. I also had the rare opportunity to introduce them onstage at a show once, and got to meet them briefly. Lux and Ivy were a fantastic couple and the true definition of soul mates. My heart goes out to Ivy in this difficult time. RIP, Lux. You were an inspiration and idol to tens of thousands worldwide.

#217 wastedyouth says:

i used to see them every halloween.i am floored.

one of the great american muscians.

#218 scott says:

I love this man and this band. They have filled my life with so much of this so called rock and roll. My kid loves them I love them and every one I know loves them. Lux lives on in my mind. And I thank him and the rest of the band for making the best music on earth. The best music means that it took me on an adventure of the heart, the mind, and to the unknown places and then back in only the way that these guys/gals can do it. thank you for giving my world some real great goodness.

#219 Laura Dolores says:

#220 Boyd Farrell (Black Market Baby) says:

The colour of the rainbow has faded again. Another shit day.

#227 Roy D. says:

Lux Interior epitomised originality, stretched artistic boundaries, exuded charisma, had an incredibly dry wit, gave everything to each performance, and he and Ivy thoroughly entertained me more times than I can remember, both in London and the US - be it at the Lyceum, Astoria, or the flea-pit little Cat's Cradle in Chapel Hill North Carolina. Every gig was the same - total dedication to the cause, and an absolute joy to be a part of.
Thanks Lux and Ivy, it was simply an honor to share space with you. Of all the comments listed here, I think Jonas #53 though much younger than me, captures my sentiments and experiences perfectly.

#228 psycho_Billie says:

I will say the best compliment that can be paid on a punk rocker:

That fucker was SICK.

RIP.

#229 Carl says:

I am truly numb after hearing the news.
I followed this band religiously over the last 25 years and met them twice.
My thoughts with Ivy and Lux's family.
Maybe now we will see them in the Rock N Roll Hall of fame at last,a place they richly deserve.
RIP mate

Wow! What a shocker, I remember being the only one in the Dominican republic with a Cramps cassette tape, it was Bad Music for Bad People and god, did I played the shit out of that one. Pooor neighboors didnt know what to make of me or punk music, hahahaha!
My condolences to Mrs. Interior (Poison Ivy)... Punk has lost its last icon, now it is really ok to say Punk is Dead!!

#237 Billy says:

Very sad news....I saw the Cramps every time they were in the Washington,DC area and several times in Philly since they started in the 70's. Their live shows were truly a thing to behold.....R.I.P. Lux We will miss you.

#238 AFS, london says:

Lux an Ivy made rock and roll exactly what it should be - dirty, funny, sexy and scary; a white knuckle ride for the drug addled psyche. I always wondered why so few other bands did that its the whole fucking point of it all isn't it? A sad day. He'll be missed.

#239 Minister of Sinister says:

Rockin' Bones, man, Rockin' Bones

#240 Roads to Moscow says:

#243 Karyn says:

This is so sad... I have seen the band a number of times live... i can't imagine how poor Ivy must feel xxx

#244 Fanny says:

I am devastated by the death of the greatest frontmen of all time. My husband and I fell in love over the Cramps and even tho we unfortunately never got to see them play as we live in New Zealand and Australia and were still in diapers when they last visited, we named our son Lux after the great man himself.
Love to Ivy...

#245 cloud says:

You will be greatly missed. The best performer I ever seen so much talent. You did so much for the music scene made so many people dance to your jams, rest in peace.

#246 Morte Escura says:

Man, this really SUCKS! Lux you were an inspiration to me when things like A Flock of Seagulls and Wham! were big headliners. I was an avid metalhead when I was introduced to your music and realized there was SO much more out there... and I never looked back!

The Cramps were so damm original NO ONE has ever come so close!

R.I.P Lux ... You've got good taste in dames, booze, chains, and boots!

Ivy... our thoughts are with you!

M.E.

#247 The Crusher says:

It's been a long time since I felt so devastated about the death of a musician... not even Ron Asheton hit me that hard. And I didn't even know Lux personally. I can not even begin to imagine what Ivy must be going through right now - I wish her all the strength in the world and maybe she'll find some solace in the fact that many people all over the world share her grief right now.

However, Lux may be gone but he'll never be forgotten. He's just gone ahead and we'll all follow some time sooner or later.

Farewell, Mad Daddy.

#248 Sean says:

So very sad...Lux was the greatest frontman ever!!
I'm just so sad I never got to see The Cramps Live.
R.I.P Lux.."Stay Sick" forever.

#249 BUTCHERSLiM says:

I
AM
CRYING.

#250 OmahaRick says:

The 3 times I saw them I was already a fan. Lux was like mixing Iggy Pop, Elvis and Alice Cooper...only better. His body abusing antics were classic. Nobody found a way to actually play the microphone like an instrument the way Lux did. I now believe in Zombies.

#251 ed says:

R I P LUX

#252 Bob D says:

I saw the Cramps at the Peppermint Lounge in the early '80's and it is still the best show I ever went to. I was just listening to Surfin' Dead and then went online to listen to WFMU where a whole set of Cramps songs was being played. At that point I knew something had happened to someone in the band. Lux was the ultimate performer.

#253 Dan Markovski says:

I, just like everyone else on the scene, am devastated! The Cramps are one of my favorite bands of all time having seen them over a dozen times over two decades. I met Lux and Poison Ivy in Sacramento in 95 before their show and I have to agree with many of the others who had the pleasure, he was an incredible delightful person. His raw power on stage and Ivy's incredible guitar playing really made you want to dance, scream and shove everyone with love. Their performance and style of playing are legendary. No other like him. I will surely miss Lux. My condolences to Poison Ivy and all friends and family. Right! Let's tear this damn place apart! Keep rocking!

#254 The Dept. of Rock says:

#260 Nick Douglas says:

Now he can truly become a god.

Stand up, rock'n'rollers... Lux has passed.

#261 Gary says:

I have not cried for someone's death in a long, long time. I cried like a baby when I heard about Lux. The Cramps have changed my life (for better and for worse) ever since the early 80's. Everytime I saw them I just couldn't believe how enormous they were. It was like goin' to church only better. I was driving home...listening to Bad Music for Bad People....I walked into my place...hit the messages...and my friend Dale had the sad task of letting me know Lux was gone. They'll never be another. My heart and best wishes go out to Ivy. THANKS LUX you Goo Goo Much you. Rest in peace.

Bad Day for Bad People

#266 tisawitchingtime says:

This makes my heart sink. This band had a radioactive energy that stayed with you for days after seeing them and I was lucky enough to see them 3 times in Toronto, twice in clubs the size of a bungalow house, one time ended in a riot with the place being torn apart. In a world of everything's been done before, they were something that had never been done before. RIP Lux. Love you like mad.

#267 Scott Milton says:

Truly sad, one of the best bands in rock and roll.

#273 Keith says:

In 1978 I was stuck in the middle of nowhere, in the Navy.
I had only a couple of friends. One of them, From NY asked me to Fly to NY over the weekend to see some new band. I told him I was not going to spend every dime I had to go see some band play for 40 min in N.Y. He told me he would never speak to me again if I did not go see this band. Off to NY we went. Yes, It was to go see The Cramps. That evening changed my life. I was instantly addicted to this sound. I love the Cramps. My favorite American band of all time. I always went to see them when they came around.
R.I.P. LUX and take it slow Ivy.

#276 nick vegas says:

this has come as a complete surprise. ive seen the cramps countless times and have been an avid listener to them for 20+years. when you heard the cramps were coming to town you knew it was gonna be a great show. even in his 60s he still had the balls to rip off his clothes on stage! lux was an amazing artist and a true inspiration not only to psychobilly but punk and subculture in general. rest in peace lux! the hootenanny wont be the same without you!

#277 Jen says:

I cannot believe this to be real. I have always enjoyed their music and am grateful that I hadn't missed a show in the past 17 years. Lux knew how to put on a grin and perform and I will dearly miss The Cramps. My thoughts are with Poison Ivy and their families.

Wow I cannot believe it; i had to google him and see his face and sadly it is him, such sad news but
we all have to go one day.
I hope to God I can find my VHS tape with the
CRAMPS 'LIVE' at Napa State Mental Hospital.
My favorite song will always be
'Garbage Man.' He had such a great sense of
humor about himself on stage, what a showman!

#284 Shawn Garrett says:

The world is a lot less cool now!

#285 Kristin says:

yeah - 96 tears in 96 eyes

I got to see them for the first time New Year's at The Warner Theater in DC with the Dead Milkmen and The Butthole Surfers in 1988. We drove from Tampa to DC nonstop and didn't even know or really care what other bands were playing. Back then good shows didn't always come to FL and we were gonna see The Cramps, by God. It was amazing. Well after midnight Lux rang in the new year but we really didn't care. We were trashed, he was trashed. He wore the black patent outfit with heals. The shoes didn't stay on as he climb the speakers and rolled on the stage ending up with cuts from glass he had broken. The whole band was amazing. I'd never seen a drummer (Nick Knox) play with one hand and smoke a cigarette with the other before. Poison Ivy was my new hero. I still have the Tshirt from the show. Some day when I'm an old punk rock lady I'm gonna make a quilt with the shirts. That one's gotta be part of it.

We did get to see them in Tampa at the Cuban Club years later and again in Atlanta at The Roxy. But that New Years show was monumental. The Cramps were one of those bands that let me know I was in the right place. So rare. I don't have the pink hair anymore but thanks to a few people like Lux & Ivy I'll always be a punk rock girl. I won't eat stuff off the sidewalk and I'll think of you when I see my tv set.

But now we should all be thinking of Ivy. Her loss is the greatest.

#286 Garbage Man says:

Right Now I have "Garbage Man" blasting as loud as it can go. The walls are moving, my bones are shaking. Im so there.
Iit's what the Cramps are. RIP Lux. It's SO GOOD. I just ccan't get enough. My thoughts are with you Ivy.

#287 Rene Poule says:

what can I say??? I was there from the beginning, November 1977. Took a car trip to NYC, CBGB's. Cramps headlining! Made the biggest difference in my life from that moment on. I was there the first time his pants ripped, Business hanging out, striped polyester suit, the first time he barfed on stage in DC at Georgetown University. I saw it all. My heart goes out to you IVY! loved you guys so much. I found a CD at a garage sale last week in Florida. Bought it cuz I could! RIP from the bottom of my Lonesometown heart.

#288 Blacky says:

#289 Eddy E aka Skullboy says:

I am so sad and sorry that this happened. When I first read the news I could'nt believe it. Then my heart sank. They put on one of the best concerts I've ever been to. It was the only one I could remember that I didn't want to end. Now it truly has. I'm so sorry you died Lux Interior and my deepest condolences to Poison Ivy. I'm gonna put on the napa state mental hospital concert dvd after writing this.
Tears welling up in my eyes now. You will be missed Lux.

#290 Porcine Cabal says:

I really cannot believe this. This is a very depressing bit of news, indeed. I wish Ivy and the band all the best in this difficult time. The world will never be the same without Lux. RIP.

#291 Jude says:

I remember seeing the Cramps at the Starship in Milwaukee in the late 1970's or 1980. I remember Lux pulling out some pubic hair and throwing it at the crowd. He was getting annoyed that everyone was so close to the stage, so he kicked the first person in front of him and everyone else fell backwards like rows of dominos. I remember being freaked out because he had so many cuts and slashes and whip marks on his body. A real punk. I remember many nights dancing to the Cramps in the punk clubs and many drunken parties listening to the Cramps and thinking their music sounded really good. They were so much fun and way cool.

#292 Rick B. says:

Truly a sad day! Sympathy to the family and regrets that I never got to see a live show.

#293 marfa-radio says:

Lux was all rockabilly, saw the band many times and he will be missed greatly.

#310 mark says:

Sad Sad Sad....
A young woman who went to LA to meet them, who I worked with, hung out with them in '86. She said they were really cool and friendly, and they watched afternoon tv together.

#311 Caoimhín says:

I was 12 when I first heard "Garbageman". I never heard anything like it before, but it was what I was looking for. That sound! It blew my mind, electrified my spine and made my body writhe!

The Cramps were a sign-post that led you to an oozing treasure-trove of True Rock'n'Roll Spirit, girls, ghouls and carnal excess.

Last month, I bought a guitar and learned "Human Fly". Now, I don't feel like playing it no more. Rock and Roll is dead.

#312 Darren Novak says:

omg the music world will never fill this void with any of todays mediocrity the world mourns a true rock legend and musical and performance genius...I have seen them on every Australian tour and they have always been my favourite live band... It's very very sad...we will always remember him.....

#315 Johnny Midnight says:

A couple of years ago, I was living in a block of flats by the ocean in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, and upstairs lived this gorgeous long-haired blonde chick who was engaged to some dude. I invited her down to my pad and put on The Cramps' Gravest Hits. She's never heard them before and was mesmerised. By the time the CD hit Goo-Goo Muck, she was grooving so deep she took all her clothes off and jumped on my lap. THAT is true rockabilly. THAT is The Cramps. THAT is the legacy of Lux Interior! Sleep restlessly my midnight brother: "When I die dontcha bury me at all; just nail my bones up on the wall"

#316 kevin scott says:

Everyday of my life I think about when will the cramps play in England again, a concert by the Cramps is so special, I remember every detail of my day, from the moment I get up to the moment I get back to my bed, the whole journey and the event. The Cramps are the only band i stood and watched like a rabbit caught in a cars headlights, they mezmerised me in a tip toe solid state, i had to watch it all, take it all in, this is the only band that ever did that to me.

Going to see the cramps is better than all my christmas's and birthdays all added together at once, I saw em twice, and belive me, there is nothing like it at all in the whole world. Songs the Cramps taught us! What am i going to do now? I am lost thats for sure, my maximum of life's high has just departed, dam this is soooooooooo bad!!!

#317 slumpy says:

The 80s would have been a sadder place without him and The Cramps. Give em Hell in Heaven Lux, cheers mate!

#318 Christos Zografos says:

He was a diamond,an honest artist. He will miss us :-(

#319 Caz says:

R.I.P. Lux, we're gunna miss ya

#320 Digger says:

...and so passes on another punk icon. Cannot confess to being a huge Cramps fan but liked their style and the Cramps were certainly an original band. The weird thing is that I have 1 Cramps song on my ipod - Goo Goo Muck. I was listening to it at about 5-30 am this morning MST - listened to tunes for about 30 minutes then went to bed. Goo Goo muck certainly played somewhere in the middle of that session. When I woke up and went back to work my wife mentioned that the Cramps lead singer had died.
Rest In Peace Lux.

#321 Luke Phantomas says:

Please Mr. Lux don't stop your R'n'R, scream-again and again in a Voodoo-Heaven!

Rest in R'n'R Forever!

#322 Kayotic says:

The human race has lost part of its soul.
To Lux who taught me everything I know...RIP
x

#323 Jennifer says:

Sad news.

#324 Angry Young Spaceman says:

Lux Interior taught me that it was allright to be a freak. In fact, he made it look downright fun. I can't think of anyone who helped so many reclaim their own original sense of humour and style, all while being wicked and dangerous and larger than life. As teenagers so many of us felt left out of the loop by the Jocks who were listening to Van Halen, and Lux emerged to show us something entirely different. If it wasn't for Lux, I also would have never heard of Hazil Atkins, Charlie Feathers, or the dozens of other forgotten rockabilly and swamp rock artists he rescued from obscurity. He also did the best twenty minute version of surfing bird I've ever seen, in Montreal, wearing high heels and a leopard print body suit. What a dude.

#325 Racine says:

Thank you for some of the funnest times ever at your shows. I feel honored to be able to say that I attended them.
No other shows compared!
RIP Lux we will miss you. You will be one crazy angel!!
Thoughts and prayers are with you Ivy!

#326 Sepehre Naficy, M.D. says:

The Cramps were (and will remain) an original American gem who wrote the original blueprint - a masterplan that influenced, and was influenced by, other era bands (Ramones, Misfits, New York Dolls, X, et al.) - of what became the mutant hybrid form of music performance art that has remained unchanged for the decades since.
I will always cherish the vision of Lux screaming into my face in Cleveland, November 2004, not to mention him ripping up the crotch of his skin-tight pants. I may have a pic of that somewhere.
That type of live Voodoo Magic comes along once in a while.

#327 Julie says:

The Cramps put on one of the best shows I have ever seen. I am so heartbroken to say that I will never get to see them preform live again. Lux was so poetic in his art. He will be sorely missed.

#328 Sid says:

I could not write this yesterday because I was simply speechless. Just as when Joe Strummer passed, for me a small part of my soul has disappeared.

I remember seeing The Cramps on a few occasions in Southern California. Every time was a fresh experience. Sure glad I traded my vinyl for cds so that I can listen to The Cramps all weekend in his honor.

Not sure what this means to everyone else, but as early as I can remember (can't seem to remember before the age of 12!), I was always in love with the best of the strangest. Lux Interior was definitely king of that beloved heap!

#329 wgg says:

As a teenage misfit who came of age in the post apocalyptic urban landscapes of late 1970’s Philadelphia, I thought I knew what rock and roll was about. And then I saw the Cramps. Lux tore the club apart, seemingly possessed by every character in Psychedelic Jungle. His lewd acrobatics and acts of prestidigitation (how do you make a patron’s beer disappear with no hands???) transformed that dingy fetid, poor-excuse of a “rock n roll art house” into its former operatic splendor. I escaped the East Coast an eon ago. About 4 years ago, I drove 3 hours to the Vic Theater in Chicago, in full regalia, so that the Cramps could teach my daughter and me the art and science of making a monster. The Cramps, of course, did not disappoint.

Tonight, we will draw the curtains in a darkened house. The interior shall be irradiated by the black and white rays of the 50 worst science fiction movies of all time. Hopefully, if we have learned our rock n roll lesson well, the ruckus that emanates from our beat-up phonograph will make the neighbors wonder what hell hath wrought.

Thank-you, thank-you, thank-you, Lux. Our best wishes to Poison Ivy.

I am so saddened by this news. Lux was and will always be in my heart a RnR genius.I followed this band since the late seventies and they never ceased to amaze me and gave me and friends many ,many memorable nights of fun and debauchery. My deepest regrets go out to Ivy and of course the rest of the crew....RIP lux.

I just can't believe he's gone. This totally sucks. I saw the Cramps three times. I saw the Date with Elvis tour at the old Ritz in NY. The Stay Sick tour at the New Ritz in NY. And Fiends from Dope Island at that club next to Fenway in Boston. He whipped his cock out once, wore a g string, and alternated between silver and gold sequin spandex. One stage diver jumped up on stage and tried to grab Poison Ivy and he put the guy in a headlock and threw him to the bouncers who proceeded to beat the crap out of him. I was deaf for a week after the Stay Sick show. I still have the ticket stubs and various t shirts. What a great band and what a big loss.

#333 Elvin says:

Been a Cramps fan for over 20 years, and I listen to them regularly. I made a compilation that entertains me on my 3-hour bicycle rides. Nothing beats The Cramps for keeping my adrenaline pumping!

Finally got to see them in Dallas in 2004. My wife, who went along just to appease me, even enjoyed the show.

The news of Lux' passing hit me right in the gut. My heart goes out to Poison Ivy and all their family members. No doubt Lux is tearing up rock n' roll heaven!

I bounced at Scorgies in Rochester, NY back in the day. The Cramps tore the place up countless times. The edge and sense of danger that they brought to the game is what rock and roll is truly about. Lux was a pisser, he loved to tear down the celing in the basement show room. Lux, you will rock forever.
RIP bro.

Lux Interior. A true showman and performer. The Cramps were the best goddamn Rock'n'Roll band that ever graced the face of this Earth.
The world is a place that has instantly become "less" by his passing. Our thoughts are with Ivy and his family. Stay Sick You Purple Knif.

Lux created a persona that will never die as long as people are still playing the Cramps' music and seeing the videos. But by satan there's nothing like seeing him climbing, crawling, and careening around (and over) the stage like the crazy rockabilly lizard king he was.

Bye Lux, and thanks for all the wonderful weirdness.

#341 mike smith(spike) says:

What can i say, ive loved the cramps since i was like 13(im now 29)there was always somthing about them that stood out theyve been imitated by numerous bands but lux and ivy just seemed to ooze sexuality, origonality, and most of all push all limits untill that fine line blurred into nothing. at a cramps show nobody was a loser, a freak or an outcast you were made to feel part of a family and i will always give praise to dr fucker for that. i saw the cramps my one and only time in st louis in 2003 at pops and was mesmerized by the sheer energy lux displayed while ivy played a solo with a wine bottle lux chugged off his. to ivy i know what you must be going through losing someone so close long before his time was due i know you dont remeber me but my thoughts are with you. the last thing lux said to me at that show when i yelled out for you to play "lets get fucked up" and lux grabbed me by my foot tall red hair and said" buddy you already are fucked up' then that tall tell drum intro started and i was in heaven.

My condolences to the family, Lux will be sorely missed by many a fan.

My 17 year old son texted me these exact words: "Lux Interior died yesterday." I just could not believe it. Saw them once in Dallas at the Gypsy Ballroom around 2005 or 2006. Still have the ticket stub. One of the best shows I have ever seen. Please God no. My thoughts and prayers go out to Ivy who must be devastated. Heart disease took him at 62 years of age. He must have been sick for awhile. How truly awful and depressing. Cramps music will live forever.

#345 Dr. Garrett says:

I miss the shows, I miss the fun, and I think Lux was really freaked when I licked his boot. But silly kids from the midwest are stupid that way. But I think that they must have liked us, too. One of the many times I saw them was at "Gathering of the Tribes" (a pre-Lollapalooza festival in Southern CA) and I was watching the loading dock area from an overpass at the venue. The Cramps walked down the ramp underneath, smiling and waving. Lux tossed his suitcase with wheels ahead of him down the ramp and it shot down and stuck under a band's tour bus. He looked up sheepishly at us and waved. I thought and still believe he was the coolest! Weird, sexy, fun... an undeniable combination.

Oh how sad! Lux and Ivy have that special quality that makes you like them as people even though you didn't know them. I know there's a lot of people like myself who got turned on to the real deal rockabilly by way of the Cramps's cover versions and interviews... the Incredibly Strange Music interview was so influential on me, just their enthusiasm and wide range of tastes... Lux and Poison Ivy made the world a better place, not only with their music but with the way they lived their lives. My condolences and love to Ivy.

#352 the Legendary Johnny Roxx (aka Johnny DelRey) says:

The Cramps were so instumental in my jump from boring "progessive" rock into the insanity that was punk. Armed only with an inkling of what to expect, having heard "the way I walk" on the EP I borrowed from a friend to play on my radio show, I saw the Cramps for the first in Philly at a club called Act II. 30 seconds in to the first number, Lux walks directly off the stage and falls on the floor. Nobody knew if he just missed the end of the stage or what. Then he jumps up and screams "love me", and just continued with the song like nothing happened. He spent the next 45 minutes jumping off the stage onto the 3 tables that were right in front of him, clearing the tables of anything on them with his feet. When the show was over there was not a glass or chair unbroken, and not a table still upright. In the frenzy, my brother ripped my leather jacket off of me and tromped to death. The Cramps went off and almost everyone there was left to just say "what the fuck just happened!" The club never re-opened. The memory of the Cramps will neverd die.
Lux Interior is irreplacable! Everyone is saying RIP. I sure hope they mean "Rock In Peace". There will be no rest where ever Lux Is going fom here.

#358 Rudi Protrudi says:

I feel like I've lost my older brother from another lifetime. Tina Peel used to hang out with the Cramps when we first moved to NYC in '77. Having been misfits in our hometown of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, we found kindered spirits in the Cramps, who were outcasts in their hometown, Cleveland. We kinda lost touch over the years, although our paths would occasionally cross. At one point I almost joined them as bassist. They were a constant source of inspiration. Rock & Roll was more than music to the Cramps. It was a lifetstyle and a religion. As long as Lux and Ivy were playing, we felt we would remain teenagers. With his passing, I feel just like I did when I was told I was too old to trick or treat on Halloween. The world became a little more real on Wednesday. I prefer unreal. Our deepest sympathies to Ivy.

#368 Kim Airs says:

This ol' punk's heart sank when I read about it in the CORRECTIONS section of the LA Times today. They printed the wrong year of birth (it was '46) and dear Lux was 62. His death should have been mentioned on the front page...

It brought me back to his New Year's shows at the dearly departed Channel and later at Avalon or whatever it was called then. Truly a frontman, unashamed and ballsy, and hot and sweaty and unforgiving. I am really sad about this - the same as I was when Joe Strummer died of wait, a heart condition. Sigh...

#370 Grease says:

I've loved the Cramps since I first heard them in '79 when I was 15. My first chance to see them was at the 930 Club in D.C. in 1984. We got there early and were waiting for them to open the roll up steel doors to the bar. When they finally did, on the other side was the Cramps! Nick, Ike, Ivy, and Lux. We came face to face for a moment, and they all stepped aside to let us pass. What a great and true rock band to appreciate their fans as much as they did! Lux was always an icon as well as the best (yet least credited) frontman. I'll miss him.

#371 Big Tim Cole says:

I saw the Cramps at their first or second CBGB show. I still have copies of their first two singles on the Vengance Label which were displayed in underground record store windows around Greenwich Village. We used to go to as many of their local shows as possible and brought along friends who sat their mesmerized by an act that was totally overwhelming. I asked Lux about his songs and he told me he got alot of ideas from TV and comic books - "Rock and Roll Band that Time Forgot is a song I got from the movie The Land That Time Forgot" is what he told me. I don't think they ever recorded that one. The act which featured Brian Gregory was fantastic. Their cover of Heartbreak Hotel on the Vengance label is a masterpiece right up there with Stan Freberg and Spike Jones. One thing that sets the Cramps apart from almost everybody in music is that they never became victims of the road.

#372 Liz says:

I had the pleasure of seeing The Cramps at The Latin Quarter in Detroit in the late 80s and I'll never forget when Lux removed his latex pants and drank the sweat he'd accumulated. What a great show! RIP Lux. Thanks for the amazing memories... for them you will always be remembered fondly.

#373 Robert Dada says:

Just been drinking and playing Cramps music all weekend. I'm so damned bummed. I'm going back and forth between near tears thinking of his passing as well as laughing my ass off as I listen to him sing. There will never ever be anyone who will be able to match his brilliant lunacy.

Can't wait for my wife to get home from work. We plan on pouring the scotch and watching the Napa State Mental Hospital DVD (Her first time - she became an instantaneous fan listening the tunes I keep playing this weekend) followed by the Tear It Up clip from Urgh!

Damn Lux I'm gonna miss you. I hope to see you again on the other side.

#376 Mia says:

I fell in love with The Cramps in the early 90s and vowed to go to every show I could and arrive early enough to be right at the front of the stage and took such a beating/crushing to be there. Some of the happiest times of my life were when Lux looked right into my eyes and sang "I want to be your siamese chihuawa" on all fours and I spanked his ass. Or when I took home a pair of underwear that he was playing with and trying on, or when I passed my first Cramps t-shirt down to my son, or when Lux put me in a headlock while singing The Crusher, or when I got into a fight at the Henry Fonda theater over a leather jacket I thought was Lux's but was too drunk to realize it wasn't. I have so many memories of the Cramps and I regret not getting to see them one last time. They have had such an impact on my life since the first day I heard them. The king of psychobilly is now with the king of the rock & roll guitar-Link Wray, what a show that would be! I will miss Lux forever...

Lux was the real deal. Saw him stage dive off the amps into the audience twenty-five years ago in Denver, he was wearing a jockstrap and high heels, amazing. I feel blessed to have experienced the whole scene. I love the Cramps' lyrics, its all so kitschy and serious, but not so at the same time. Lux was an amazing front man, just loved what he did, the Cramps were right up there with the Stooges, the Dolls, the Ramones...just absolute kick-ass punk rock music that's all about having a good time. He was an icon, I'll really miss him.

#381 shelby says:

I am speechless. The world of music will never be the same. In every performance that I ever was blessed enough to witness, with every inch of his body, with every drop of sweat, with every contortion, and with every sound that emerged from his lips he embodied rock n roll. Once I threw a red sequin glove on stage and he rubbed it over his crotch and threw it back into the crowd. It was perfect. For over twenty years I have had his music playing in my head. My daughter's name is Ivy. She is now 17. There will never be another Lux and he will never really die. My deepest sympathy are extended to his wife and loved ones.

It has taken me a while to be able to put into words how I feel about Lux's death.
Like many hardcore Cramps fans I have been a goo goo muck for a very long time.
26 of my 43 years have been musically consumed by Lux and Ivy. 7 times I waited
anxiously in front of the stage for Lux to walk out bend the mic stand into a pretzel,
look me in the eye and scream," You ain't no punk, you punk!!!!"

He was bigger than life to me on stage....A Godmonster from the end of the world,
A full-tilt non-stop It-Thing Hard on, Two fisted Gun Totin' Six-Shootin' Ringtailed Buckaroo!!
Lux was rock n' roll to me. He was Gene Vincent, Ghoulardi, and Caligula all rolled into one.
Off stage he was the kindest, most endearing, and genuine person I have ever met in the
music world. His musical influence is far reaching and will touch rock n' roll forever.

To Ivy: please know how many people love you and care about you. Keep rockin'
that Gretsch...like a bad girl should. Birthday love to you today 2/20.

Funniest story I heard was from my friends (Mr & Mrs Perfect Suburban Couple) who went to see The Police...guess who was supporting, on their 1st UK showing (I think). Well you can imagine the nicey-nice Police fans when a midnight bell tolled and hooded characters threw an old coffin onstage...well the rest you can guess...they played to a cleared house needless to say and I bet they loved it the more.

i saw the Cramps here in tampa several years back....great show. my best memory about them is my 1 year old daughter bopping in her car seat to "TV set" not long after we adopted her from china in 2004. she's always had good taste.
