The cuts are currently underway and are expected to continue throughout the week, sources familiar with the situation said.
The number of staffers in North America expected to lose their jobs is unclear.
While the layoffs are believed to be substantial, one source said they would be well under one-third of the workforce in the region.
Word is trickling in about the major layoffs starting today at EMI.
The Velvet Rope says 10 people out at Blue Note, and most of the staff at Caroline; Capitol and Virgin staff to learn who stays and goes tomorrow.
UPDATE: Capitol Music Group has started cuts in marketing and A&R. Many more expected tomorrow.
UPDATE: Capitol PR apparently survives, and what’s left of the publicists at the smaller labels will be folded into that group.

Makes you think that Indie in the real sense of the word is coming back in a big way!
Great article. I agree. There should just be one record label, and only the best music will be available at Starbucks. That way, we will know what to buy. The future of music is looking good! I am hoping for the David Archuleta box set featuring Celine Dion on harmonies. SICK!
