Whether you’re a football fan or not, the Super Bowl Halftime show is one of the biggest pop culture events of the year and the last few have been seriously lacking. Last year was M.I.A.‘s “middle finger-gate,” which, much to Maya’s delight, caused an uproar, even though we had already seen Janet Jackson’s breast back in ‘04. During a disastrous performance in 2010, which sparked rumors of a zombie outbreak, the Black Eyes Peas sleepwalked through what used to be a spectacular production. However, this year Beyoncé is set to perform, hopefully wiping the slate clean and giving Middle America’s palette a much-needed refresher. Though it is unconfirmed, AP reported that the announcement will be made sometime on Wednesday. Via Deadline
The official announcement is expected tomorrow, but reportedly Beyonce has signed on to play the halftime show of Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans on February 3, live on CBS. There’s always plenty of hype surrounding this choice, and for good reason: Madonna last year drew more average viewers for her halftime performance than the overall average of the game (and a good game at that, with the Giants knocking off the Patriots).
