Eric Clapton broke a world record last Friday after selling the painting Abstraktes Bild for $33.7 million, the most ever paid for a living artist’s work. The work is that of German artist Gerhard Richter, the mercurial painter considered to be one of the world’s top-selling artists. As the BBC points out, Eric Clapton is the 17th-richest British musician.

Abstraktes Bild, painted in 1994 , which was owned by rock star Eric Clapton, has been described as a “masterpiece of calculated chaos”.
