Former “Britain’s Got Talent” contestant Susan Boyle made a record-breaking debut on Sunday’s new U.K. chart with her debut album “I Dreamed a Dream” (Syco Music/Sony Music Entertainment).
It sold 410,000 units to become Britain’s fastest-selling album of 2009 and recorded the biggest first-week sales of any album in U.K. chart history, according to Official Charts Company data.
…even her greatest supporters may not have believed that the eccentric lady who still lives in her childhood home in Blackburn in the heart of West Lothian, would celebrate not just the number one album in Britain, but also Australia and Ireland.
The album, I Dreamed A Dream – named after the Les Miserables tune that Miss Boyle sang at her audition – was last night confirmed as the fastest selling UK debut ever, shifting 411,820 copies in its first week – beating the previous fastest-selling debut of all time, Leona Lewis’s Spirit.
It is on course to top the charts in America, Canada and New Zealand. In the U.S., it has projected first-week sales of around one million.
Simon Cowell in The Mirror:
“This success couldn’t have happened to a more deserving or lovelier person. She did it her way and made a dream come true. Susan Boyle has broken the rules. Her story is like a Hollywood film but this time it’s real life and a really talented, nice lady who has won.“Yesterday it emerged that her mum, Bridget, who died two years ago, had warned that she would have “more problems than happiness” if she was discovered. And Susan’s brother, John, told Hello! magazine: “One thing you learn fast about her is that you shouldn’t let her get overtired.
RTÉ:
Britain’s Got Talent’ judge Piers Morgan has said that he is responsible for Susan Boyle’s success.
Morgan said: “So there we have it. It’s all down to me. And given that Simon Cowell will be making millions from her over the next few years, I can’t wait to see my cut of the profits – though I suspect it will involve a lot of noughts with no other number in front of them.”
Advertisement“Susan Boyle is a phenomenon, a one-woman tidal wave of hope and inspiration who makes you feel just a little bit better about life.”
“Without ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, Susan Boyle would have probably carried on living alone with her cat, never knowing if she had what it takes to be a star.”
