Four people were shot at the Family Unity in the Park event Saturday night at Luke Easter Park on the city’s east side. One of the victims died overnight at MetroHealth Medical Center.
According to Cleveland Police, the shootings happened after musical guest George Clinton wrapped up his set and the fireworks ended. Police say someone fired shots into a large crowd wounding three people and killing a 16-year-old.
Katrina Tucker was out celebrating her 55th birthday when the shots were fired. “I saw police running… but I thought it was crowd control” says Tucker.
One eyewitness, David, tells 19 Action News the shootings happened “right after the fireworks… that’s when the action started…heard four shots. The police were here within two minutes, because they were already here”...
It was unclear how long after Clinton or the other musicians performed that the shooting erupted or what prompted it. Police said they didn’t know if those involved in the fight were among concertgoers leaving the area.
“These were younger people, so we’re not sure,” police Sgt. Sammy Morris said. “George Clinton is an older (artist). We’re not going to speculate.”
A 16-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the head died of his injuries early Sunday, Morris said. He didn’t know the conditions of the other three who were wounded: a 20-year-old woman shot in the neck, and a 14-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man each hospitalized with leg wounds…
