Who says there are no second acts in American lives?
Almost a decade after the producer and label owner’s career was thrown into a tailspin by criminal charges Irv Gotti is getting back into the music industry courtesy of long-time business associate Lyor Cohen. (Irv was charged with using his label, Murder Inc., to launder money for Crack Wars-era drug kingpin Kenneth “Supreme” McGriff. He was later acquitted, but by that time his label was essentially dead in the water.) Via All Hip-Hop:
According to the New York Post Lyor Cohen has tapped Irv Gotti to work with him in the new, unnamed company.
They are already working on advising two high-profile clients – Kanye West and Drake.
Lyor Cohen, who left the top spot at Warner Music Group in September, has a long history with Irv Gotti.
Irv Gotti’s record label Murder Inc., was partially owned and distributed by Def Jam, while Lyor Cohen was running that company.
We forget it now, but Irv was a major player in the rap game around the turn of the millennium. This is a smart hire. Lyor Cohen doesn’t tend to make a ton of mistakes.
