“We want to be as free (as) players as possible,” Ulrich told Rolling Stone during the band’s Northern California appearance for Record Store Day. “We’ve been observing Radiohead and Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we’ll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the Internet.”
No, he’s not endorsing peer-to-peer sites, but there’s no mistaking what Ulrich meant. The group is considering whether to follow the lead of Radiohead and Reznor, leader of the band Nine Inch Nails. Those acts sent shock waves throughout the music industry over the past six months by distributing albums over the Web. They also offered digital versions of their albums for free.

why don't they just sue their fans, or a better idea just go away Lars
severe hatred for the man who brought down napster. hey lars? did it help??? have you made tons of money off of legal downloads??
bitch.
Prior to them suing Napster and setting in motion the current landscape of the online digital download arena, I would have welcomed this band - Metallica.
But at this point, to get on board so to say with someone else's innovative idea that involves a certain amount of freedom and respect for the common music consumer(the little people) - NO THANKS!
Sorry, can't have it both ways!
You're either the David or the Goliath!
Long live indie music, indie thought, and indie ideas!
Good day sir, I say good day!
Do more good than harm!
These are my thoughts.

FUCK LARS AND METALLICA, GREEDY BASTARDS!!!!
Hey Lars...Wake up!!! Metallica is Dead!!!
You probably think the fans went away when you cut your hair. WRONG!!
Guess again you dwarf!! Rehab?? WRONG!!
Give up??? You fucked over the very people who put you on top to begin with!! Your fans, stupid!!!
One more thing Lars...I suggest you save your money because your earning years and creativity are over!!! Get real and get lost... you little prick!!!
Lars needs to get hit by a truck and while his body is in a coma. The whole hospital he's in gets burned down.
You're done you fucking has-been.
After years of suing mp3 servers and owners, including their own fans. They now believe in digital distribution? Only they had to wait years later for real musicians to take the first steps after no ones gives a shit about their poppy metal band anymore?
They should build a time machine using all those arena dollars and go back to when they didn't suck anymore as a band. James can be an alcholholic again, Lars can play drums, Kirk would still have hair, and guys like Bob Rock would still be producing shit like Motley Crue.
These are the same lameasses who are releasing their new music through Guitar Hero.
there's a difference between Radiohead/NIN and Metallica. Radiohead and NIN are still actually moving forward in their careers as artists and continue to come out with good material. Lars and Metallica need to realize that they aren't going to capitalize on the way the music industry works today. If no one really buys their CDs anymore (which, around the time of their last album, CD sales were still prevalent), NO ONE will want their music online. It's time for Metallica and similar acts to give up and at least savor those die-hard fans who remember them for what they were at the peak of their careers.
bunch of hypocrites!! you guys know you'll be the first to download it for free when it comes out...
Even if this is free I will steal it out of pure spite, as will millions of others.
Waaaa. Poor, cheap, unemployed loser downloaders didn't like the fact they had to pay for someone else's work. How dare Lars ask you to pay for music. I guess when you're done making those fries you give those away at the end of your shift. Get off the net, and go to a library. And Nine Inch Nails suck like Trent sucks Michael Stipe while getting tooled by Maynard. Stones rule.
Doesn't anybody have anything good to say about metallica? Get over it move out of your parents basement, get a real job, and just admit that you like metallica they rock
You should really check into all your sources on what your saying people,.... yes Metallica did create havoc on peer to peer, but they only did this, because someone leaked new meterial from an unreleased new album, back in the day. And this can an kill album, which cost so much to make.
So really, they are just tring to keep their jobs, and such...
Hopefully this album is better then the last few eh people?
LETS HERE SOME GUITAR SOLO'S!!!!
40 years ago someone had the balls to sneak a tape recorder into a Led Zeppelin concert. 10 years years ago it was to be had by all on Napster. Fuck you Lars.
