AP:

As Madonna kicked off her international “Sticky and Sweet” tour Saturday night, she took a none-too subtle swipe at the presumptive Republican nominee for U.S. president.

Amid a four-act show at Cardiff’s packed Millennium Stadium, a video interlude carried images of destruction, global warming, Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, Zimbabwe’s authoritarian President Robert Mugabe _ and U.S. Senator John McCain. Another sequence, shown later, pictured slain Beatle John Lennon, followed by climate activist Al Gore, Mahatma Gandhi and finally McCain’s Democratic rival Barack Obama.

AFP:

John McCain’s campaign hit back at Madonna on Sunday after the pop diva kicked off her world tour with a concert that bracketed the US presidential candidate with Adolf Hitler.

McCain campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds angrily condemned the segment of Madonna’s concert in Cardiff on Saturday that appeared to draw a comparison between McCain, Hitler and Zimbabwean strongman Robert Mugabe.

“The comparisons are outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time,” Bounds said in a statement reported by Fox News.

“It clearly shows that when it comes to supporting Barack Obama, his fellow worldwide celebrities refuse to consider any smear or attack off limits.”

Howie Klein:

Neither my politics nor my motivations are identical with Madonna’s but when she juxtaposes McCain and Hitler, it isn’t unfounded. Will McCain put Jews in gas chambers? No, I doubt that’s something he’d get behind—their era’s scapegoats are probably someone else. But Hitler’s authoritarianism, his melding of corporate and government functions and his use of war for social cohesion and political gain… now we’re talking.

I watched the clip a couple times and didn't see Hitler.

It seems to be that Madonna had chosen one of the most effective ways of communication to express her self, (her audience), and make her points across as any other US citizen with the right of freedom of speech. In her defense, the fact that she is a multi millions public figure, her desires for a better future for The America hurt to eyes of the republican party candidate John McCain since she is hurting him where it hurts the most with the truth. In conclusion, one should have the right to express oneself weather you are pours, known or rich. The right to convey in public once political preferences it should not be a major problem to the eyes of the world; since, she is not the one running for president.

celebrities attacking john mccain is exactly what he needs to win. keep it up! i knew who i was voting for right after the primaries.i decided after i compared mccains resume and the non existent one obama has.

#4 Mike says:

so lol, let's talk about that resume:

- a 'war hero' who collaborated with North Vietnam after his capture
- a history of adultery
- voted repeatedly against a Martin Luther King Jr. public holiday
- called his wife a cunt in front of members of the media
- sadly uninformed about major global issues (like the difference between Sunnis and Shiites)
- unaware of core issues regarding health care
- thinks people who make $5 million a year or more qualify as rich
- can't relate to the average American's economic situation (doesn't know how many homes he owns?!?)

If that's what constitues a good C.V., I'd be grateful to have a 'non-existent' one like Obama...

#5 wheatus says:

lol, how do you have something that is non-existent?

Also, do you believe in miracles and angels and fairies and stuff?

#6 CN says:

Mike listens to WAY too much liberal rhetoric.

#7 Ahmet Ertegun says:

I need celebrities to tell me who to vote for. Who do Britney and Paris want?

#8 Julie says:

When we start listening to celebrities (some of the richest people in the world and the most liberal) to tell us whom to vote for, we will be in much more CRITICAL trouble than we already are in.

#9 djd says:

McCain will win in another staged election. NEXT STORY PLZ.

-barak obama launches political carreer in home of convicted weatherman and bomber of the united states capital and other places, william ayers.

wheatus, i never said i had anything other than my opinion. i just said i compared something that exists and some thing that is mythical or metaphorical or whatever it is that obama has.

Actually, we can leave the candidates out of this one because it's nothing to do with either of them. This is just grandma Madonna trying desperately to matter.

#12 Kevin says:

Hah, to Howie Klein: please come back to reality. Comparing McCain and Hitler, in any fashion, is a "bit" much. You should have added that both were in the military too! There's another similarity... so spooky! Please show me how McCain's "authoritarianism" is similar to Hitler. Let's see: Hitler destroyed any amount of democracy in his country, and what about McCain...? Please show me how McCain used the Iraq War for social cohesion and political gain when more than half the country is against the war - and that he was only a Senator at the time of war being declared. Finally, show me how Hitler's plan to wipe out Eastern Europe and kill millions of people deliberately is even close to anything McCain did. The comparison was not only unfair by Madonna, but I am appalled that anyone would try and draw any connection thereafter.

Hitler stands for evil, and will for a long time after we are dead and gone. Your logic is disgusting and is something like this: I suppose we all commit some amount of evil in our lives and thus so did Hitler, therefore we are similar. Of course, any sane person would call this ridiculous and to put Bush, McCain, the GOP, the Democrats, or anyone in our government on the level of Hitler is a total insult to this nation and to those that died fighting Hitler. And by the way, comments like yours, and people like you, are the reason why the GOP continues to have credibility in this country despite all of Bush's apparent errors. Loony Leftists like Madonna make people hate the left and see them as simply out of touch with reality.

Ho hum. who gives a flying banger about Madonna and what she "thinks" politically. Do people actually pay money to listen to/watch this washed up act?

#14 Andrew says:

Look at the source. Modonna has offered nothing but waste to america. No talent, no soul. Have another Clinton cigar MO!

#15 lm says:

If Madonna is neither a politician nor journalist/media specialist isn't her use of any of the persons listed slander? And isn't it against the law? If a magazine reported something Madonna didn't like wouldn't she yell slander and hold the agency liable for the defammation of character? Did she not slander a US citizen in another country for profit? Shouldn't she be held to the same standards? These are the laws that are close to the American rights whether he/she is a presidential candidate or not. It doesn't matter if I am a Democrat or Republican I am embarrassed that a fellow US CITIZEN chose to slander a well known American in another country and cheapen our reputation as Americans. My best friend lost many family members to the Hilter regime. It is NOT a small comment. She says she likes Madonna but will never listen again to her as she made money and notarity off of loved ones deaths
