This year, Marianne Faithfull celebrates her 50th year as a performer in a world that almost ate her alive. Reflecting back, Faithfull picks her favorite 13 albums for The Quietus:
Nick Cave And The Bad Seeds – Murder Ballads
‘Where The Wild Roses Grow’ is a lovely song. Nick loves Kylie Minogue, he really adores her, and she’s Australian and they both get on very well, so I’m not surprised she was on this album. She’s got a lovely little voice. Polly Harvey was on this album as well, I really like her. None of this is easy listening, but it’s really interesting, and really well done. It was a great, experimental thing to do. I don’t know if it would work nowadays, we’re lucky that he did it 15 years ago. Things have got more and more gauche, but Nick Cave is still blazing on.
