Artist Richard Prince – known for pissing off copyright scholars with his questionable appropriation – recently set up in NYC’s Central Park for an afternoon of reading and nudity. He was also joined by Bob Dylan (they’re friends), who was seen painting in the background. Eventually the painting found its way online. The whole thing was confirmed by a source to Marina Galperina of Animal New York:

Tits, I think. And emended first editions, and paperbacks of Bowman’s BUNNY MODERN. Bob Dylan was painting on an easel in the background. Bob has wild hair and good shades. He paints nudes with the authority you’d expect of a man who’d been fucked by Patti Smith. Fabiola had told Bob that his motivation was “Basel.” Bob laughed and said he didn’t have that kind of money, but he could do Montreux.

Wow, Dylan’s got skills – except that those skills are more of the “joke’s on you” variety. It’s questionably whether Dylan actually painted the portrait. It could have easily been Prince. But one thing’s for certain – echoing the controversy surrounding his Gagosian Gallery show – Dylan definitely wasn’t painting from real life. It’s actually based on a photo of Sonia Aquino by Bruno Bisang, according to a second source. Both sources are anonymous; so we can’t tell you if they’re still on speaking terms or not. The story was then updated and contemplated. Via Animal New York:

I’ve always been suspicious of Dylan, specifically, his second Gagosian show which felt like a prank on his patrons — a “rich people will buy anything” type deal — but also, a bigger prank on his easily angered critics who’d blow their load early, like myself. Is this topless, latest Dylan “painting” also commentary? Is Dylan, like his good old friend Richard Prince, a sort of a feminist and by “painting” a famous fashion photographer’s polished image of a bombshell Italian actress and adding some grass by her highly commercialized tits, Dylan is commenting on the public, media and tabloid commodification of a woman? That people who like #BOOBS will retweet anything?
