We’re not afraid to say that Bruno Mars makes us a little uncomfortable. Forgive us for being a little close-minded, but we believe that pompadours in Hip-hop are still a little ahead of their time. Despite our reservations, Mars is an undeniable force, capable of shape-shifting from the go-to guy for fresh, Hip-hop hooks to an updated Doo-wopper. He has Hip-hop to thank for his success, but his wide-ranging knowledge of songwriting and arranging definitely account for his staying power. Via Rap Genious:
What makes Mars the most modern, though, and not just an updated version of that dude he used to impersonate, is the fact that he understands and incorporates elements of hip-hop. It’s no accident that his first hits (“Airplanes” and “Billionaire”) were hooks for rap songs. He is able to use a certain type of lyrical swagger, and the reason both “Billionaire” and “Fuck You” (written by Mars and his production and writing partners, The Smeezingtons) work so well is that they graft a materialistic, aggressive (notice the prominent cursing in both tunes) attitude onto a gorgeous melody. This incongruity grabs the listener immediately, and is no small part of the fact that both songs were such giant hits.
The multi-talented Mars is now being recognized as the sleeping giant that he is, not only performing on an upcoming Saturday Night Live, but hosting as well. Gahhh! We kind of hate this guy. Not really, but if he possesses this much talent, why can’t he act like a total douche like everyone else?
Atlantic recording artist Bruno Mars will host and perform on Saturday Night Live October 20th. This appearance will mark the Grammy winner’s return to TV and the debut performance of his new single “Locked Out Of Heaven.” The singer/songwriter/producer/musician has also announced the release of the “UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX,” the follow-up to his platinum certified breakthrough debut and “Album of the Year” Grammy nominated “DOO-WOPS & HOOLIGANS. Mars’ new album “UNORTHODOX JUKEBOX” will arrive everywhere December 11th.
Eh, whatever. Dude’s a genius and we’re all suckers.
