Revered Los Angeles Hip-hop label, Stones Throw Records, has announced that there is a documentary in the works. Founded in 1996 by DJ/producer, Peanut Butter Wolf, the independent label has grown steadily to include a diverse, yet solid roster of artists and 370 releases and counting. The sheer range of voices on Stones Throw, including the late J Dilla, Madlib, Mayer Hawthorne, and Dam Funk to name a few, is a testament to the label’s quest to release pioneering independent music. To help fund the project, produced and directed by Music doc-extraordinaire, Jeff Broadway, a Kickstarter campaign has been set up with some very enticing pledge rewards. For your support you won’t be getting some lame tote bag, but some truly collectible pieces of Stones Throw history. If you can find it in your generous heart to pledge $3,000, be sure to notify us so we can come over and sit in awe of your Quasimoto skateboard. Via Kickstarter
Catalog highlights include hip-hop classics like Madvillain’s Madvillainy, Dilla’s Donuts and Quasimoto’s The Unseen. They also include retro-soul hits such as Mayer Hawthorne’s A Strange Arrangement and Aloe Blacc’s Good Things, Dam-Funk’s boogie-funk masterpiece Toeachizown, and the oddball works of James Pants and Gary Wilson. Drawing on live concert footage, never-before-seen archival material, inner-circle home video and photographs and in-depth interviews with the folks who put Stones Throw on the map, OUR VINYL WEIGHS A TON will delve deeper into the label’s enigmatic artists, history, culture and global following.
