Dancehall reggae singer songwriter Sugar Minott is dead at 54. Sugar Minott’s death comes after recent unconfirmed news that that Minott was suffering from Angina Pectoris, a heart condition..

The Godfather of Dancehall, Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott formed his own label Black Roots in the 1980s. His Youth Promotion organization helped developed new talent. His website says the following about the organization:

“The Sound Youthman Promotion began to dominate the Dancehall scene by voiceing artist’s like Junior Reid, Yami Bolo, Don Angelo, the late Sugar Minott Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty and Garnet Silk who did his first recording for the Black Roots Label. The list of Artists goes on – Tony Rebel, Colorman, Daddy Freddie, Johnny Osbourne, Steve “Shalom” Harper and many more.”

Under Black Roots / Island, Sugar released notable albums “Dancehall Showcase” and “Herbman Hustling”. Later works included 1999’s “Easy Squeeze” album on World, “Hidden Treasures” also that year from East Street, and “Good Thing Going” in 1998 from VP.

Funeral arrangements have not been announced. Sugar Minott will be greatly missed.

Foundation dancehall / reggae singer, Lincoln ‘Sugar’ Minott is dead. He reportedly died earlier this evening, and although the cause of death has not yet been publicized, just a couple months ago Dancehall.Mobi reported that he was gravely ill and had been diagnosed as having Angina Pectoris – a severe heart condition – and ordered by his doctor to rest. R.I.P. to the original ‘Godfather of Dancehall’.

While the rumour is circulating on internet until a few hours, it looks like Sugar Minott death is confirmed. The Jamaican singer had a heart disease since a few time.

Sugar Minott had a great career that began with the group African Brothers then solo recording his first album for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. He also played a big part in the career of artists such as Junior Reid, Tristan Palmer, Tony Tuff, Yami Bolo, Garnett Silk and many more with his musical school Youth Promotion. RIP.
