In a phone interview this week, Mr. Leo offered a taxonomy of New Jersey punk. The towns nearest the Hudson River have a direct symbiosis with New York; beyond them (and the adjacent swampland) are a series of cities and towns a dozen or so miles out — Newark, Montclair, his Bloomfield — that developed their own identities before New York’s suburban sprawl extended far into New Jersey; the real suburbs are even deeper in.

“It’s got cultural microclimates,” Mr. Leo said. “It’s not this big monolith of Springsteen and guidos.”
