Honestly, we’re not sure what Epic was expecting when they signed Death Grips.
Death Grips make challenging, experimental rap music and famously don’t give a shit about what you think. When they do things like leak their own album, put a picture of a dick on the cover and post private emails from the label on their Facebook, that’s not a bug, that’s a feature. Epic either knew what they were getting when they signed Grips, or else someone didn’t do their homework.
Either way, Epic has had enough of Death Grips being Death Grips, and is in the process of dropping them. Via Pitchfork:
Epic Records is a music first company that breaks new artists. That is our mission and our mandate. Unfortunately, when marketing and publicity stunts trump the actual music, we must remind ourselves of our core values. To that end, effective immediately, we are working to dissolve our relationship with Death Grips. We wish them well.
Was this ever really going to play out any other way?
