In front of Clark, Lydon mocked the lip-synching tradition of the show and created a bit of high-spirited chaos. Clark takes it all in stride, to his credit. Lydon needs this moment on his permanent record—too many of his attempts to be weird came off as too premeditated, too easy.

DESTROY JOHNNY, DESTROY! The only thing that's missing is when the next performer came on and you still hear the chaos going on backstage. And the guy who followed them up was one of those real schlocky one-hit-wonders.
