The Specials reunion in 2008...Terry Hall: 'You do it with dignity or don't do it at all'
David Prince
UPDATE: Marco on the Bass:
I had briefly met Lynval before, but I walked over to say hello and while he tuned his guitar, I asked him about The Specials rumored reunion. So here is the scoop and it seems pretty legitimate. It turns out Lynval and Terry Hall are the driving force behind the reunion and that Neville, Horace, Brad and Roddy are all on board. According to Lynval he has rehearsed with Terry, Brad, Horace and Roddy and the songs they have played sound amazing. Unfortunately a lot of the band meetings have included lawyers and managers and that has made it slow going to pull it together. Lynval said that he and most of his band mates recognize that this reunion is for the fans and they all realize that the time is right to do this. Initially they plan to play 12–13 shows around the UK this October and November and based on how the shows go they will discuss booking shows in the US.
In terms of how everyone is getting on, it sounds like Jerry is the major stumbling block here. Lynval mentioned that Jerry has “a lot of baggage” and that while they have told him they want him to be the musical director of the band, he is having trouble accepting that all 7 band members are now on equal footing and its not his band anymore to say what will happen and when. That seems to jive with the recent interview with Jerry I posted here recently where he expressed his concerns that the band was not ready to play out live. Lynval confirmed that the other members are committed to playing together and that the reunion will go forward with or without Jerry.
UPDATE: Billboard:
“It’s weird because we’re all living all over the place, so it’s difficult arranging to be in the same place at the same time,” Hall admits. “We’re doing a block of rehearsals in June and then once we’ve done that, we’ll see when we’re ready.”
“We’re going to play just the first and second album,” he continues. “The first album probably in full and half of the second one. That’s all we want to do—just get together and play the songs once more.”
At present, the band only intends to play a series of theatre-sized venues in the U.K. “That’s the kind of venue where we started,” explains Hall. “I don’t like arena dates, at all. They’re just soulless. The very nature of this band, we shouldn’t go and play sit-down theatres. It would just be weird. I think we should carry on where we left off.”
UPDATE: BBC:
We brought you news of The Specials reunion last month, well now founding member Jerry Dammers has said he isn’t too keen on the whole idea.
Despite the positive reaction to a reunion from band mates Terry Hall and Neville Staples, on a tour in September/ October, Jerry is a little less optimistic:
“We’ve had one attempt at a trial rehearsal, which at no point was all seven people in the room at the same time.
It’s very early days you know we’re talking but there’s nothing definite at the moment at all.”
[...]
“There are still people out there who would love to see the original Specials.
They have an idea in their heads about what the original Specials are.
If we can live up to that, then we should do it, if we can’t, we shouldn’t.”
BBC:
The Specials have been talking to the BBC about reforming officially, for a reunion tour.
No dates as yet, frontman Terry Hall says they need to get into the studio first:
“Well we’re still trying to put dates together, but hopefully September/ October time. We need to spend the Summer rehearsing… I think it’s taken me 30 years to realise we could do it really well.”
Terry Hall and Lynval Golding made surprise appearances at last year’s Glastonbury Festival.
The pair appeared onstage with Lily Allen to perform Gangsters, and later on a different stage, with Damon Albarn on piano and a beatboxer, performing A Message To You, Rudy.
Terry Hall says that seeing other artists on the reunion trail has been an inspiration:
“Because I saw Patti Smith do Horses, and I saw The Pixies reforming… you do it with dignity or don’t do it at all”.

Dear Lord,
Couldn't you have The Specials rehearse like crazy for the next three weeks and have them play Coachella 2008?
Pretty please?
In all seriousness, THAT would be the reunion show to make Coachella. Especially due to the fact that ska is so huge in Southern California, but those young whippersnappers need an education in what makes a great band, regardless of genre...
Oh, to hear "A Message To You Rudy," "Ghost Town" or "Gangsters" on the polo field... Just in the way the Pixies transcend being a mere alternative band, the Specials remain a mysterious, unique creation regardless of their supposed genre, and we need them more than ever!
this is fucking amazing
Hopefully the Fun Boy 3 reunion ain't far behind.
this is freaking great!
I think I just pee'd in my pants a little.
a little? I just dropped trou and peed all over the living room floor! The freaking SPECIALS?!?!
Sorry fanboys, but this even trumps My Bloody Valentine. The Specials are the law. They would rule Coachella in any year. Here's to 09!
Do yourself a favor and find a clip of them performing on "Saturday Night Live" back in the day. Priceless.
SNL clip added above
The Daily Swarm is so best. I heart all y'all!
P.S. I want to be The Specials when I grow up.
Saw them on a reunuion tour in 1998 at a little club in hollywood (the key club?). they seriously ruled.
~ McKilla
who still wants to be a member of the nite klub "i don't work cause i don't have to!"
thanks for that.
#9 McKilla,
That 1998 reunion, that didn't include Terry Hall, did it?
The Specials have toured under that name on and off for the past few years with various original members (either Lynval or Neville), but never with Jerry Dammers or Terry Hall. If this really happens, could be better than Zeppelin
Doubt they'll come to the US :( :(
I hope this happens. I hope they play in the US.
Come down to Los Angeles California!!!!!
It would be grand to see The Specials together again...
Long live Ska!
"Ghost Town" is a seminal track!
Wow, I have not done any skanking in a while....
* Rudeboy shout outs to The English Beat and General Public.
The SNL stuff is great! Blow US bands like Real Big Fish right out of the water! The only thing that has dated is Terry's white socks.
Top Banana!
I still wear my Specials T Shirt and cannot wait for their return. "Stop your messin around....ah ahhhh, Rudy, a message to you Rudy"
If all of you Skalites out there want to re-live some of that orginal 70's-80's ska, then look out for a DVD called Dance Craze, which was a docufilm of a live concert, which included The Specials, Madness, The Beat, Bad Manners, Body Snatchers and The Selector, it's bloody great! (You can get it on eBay for about a fiver)
I am an original rude boy (I wore a red trilby hat, and never got attacked by the skins, nor mods, as I was an inbetweeny, loving both genres!) those were the days that the gangs were pretty innocent, compared to today!!!
I'm just a stereotype, i enjoy getting P^^sed at night......or am I the man in grey, the man from C & A
ive waited over25 years for the specials to get back together, lets hope it comes off because i for one am busting to see them.best group of all time ,i have every single, every album and ive just purchased the hits dvd.hall and dammers need there heads banging together, whatever trouble was between them has come and gone, leave it in the past, your suppose to be wiser men now and it was 25 years ago when u were still young. please reform because there are millions an millions of fans out there waiting for this myself included. LONG LIVE THE SPECIALS. vic
Wouldnt this be a dream come true !!!!
long live ska.........
i cant waite 2 see the specials back .ive waited nearly 30 years for this to happen .i have every album an every single an just bought the cd/dvd release. its a dream come true that the band i spent my pocket money on as a kid are back as i was truly gutted wen they split in 81. if jerry dammers has reservations or cant put past squobbles in the past an leave them there then the rest of the band can do it without him, but it will be sad if he didnt do it,coz after all they were still relatively young wen they were squabblin an split. come on jerry an the boys your suppose 2 be older an wiser, leave the past in the past an give people like myself a chance 2 come see u an live out a dream. vic
woahhh, they should play rebellion in the uk! neville staple did last year, which was amazing, but for the whole specials..it would top it, absolutely
HELL YES!! the specials are the best
lynval seems like such a bad ass. i hope they get back together even though they will never come to dallas texas.
According to British newspaper The Guardian last week, The Specials promoter said that 45,000 tickets sold out the tour in one single hour. Getting in will be almost an impossibility for all but a tiny fraction of fans. Even if they made it to America, only a small minority would get tickets.
