Hell hath frozen over...

#2 Ugh says:

Depressing.

#3 Matt says:

Hey, at least it's a cover and not an original Clash song.

#4 Janie Jones says:

I'm all lost in a supermarket

#5 Alex says:

This is just blasphemy that these marketing morons are using a song from a band that stood for the little man and was as anti-materialism as there ever was or ever will be.

This specific song has the following ironic lyrics:
"Oh that you were doin' it wrong, wrong, wrong
Now when it drops
Oh you gonna feel it
That you were doin' it wrong and how"

I just wish that these marketing execs would have half a brain in there pretentious little heads and actually listen to what the songs they use are saying.

F-you Nissan, I'm never buying one of your crappy cars because of this.

#6 RudyCantFail says:

Someone had to license the rights to the song - "London Calling" was used in a Jaguar commercial years ago. I am getting tired of hearing it, but the idea doesn't bother me so much. It would be interesting to know who is getting paid, The Clash or Toots Mayall, who wrote the song.

"He who fucks nuns will later join the church."

#7 RudyCantFail says:

Frederick Toots' Hibbert, of Toots and The Maytalls, wrote the tune.

#8 Jangotat says:

I didn't know that song so Google led me here and now I have to hear it some more. I understand the angst about stuff like this. I laugh when I see the Carnival Cruise commercial with Iggy Pop singing Lust For Life. CCR's Fortunate Son was being used for a while too, and I think in some "patriotic" commercials which was totally laughable. I like the tune and I think it's cool to here The Clash in mainstream media.

#9 Rudee says:

Hey, I used to wear my politics on my sleeve... AND I recall being able to buy Clash T-Shirts at their concerts in '82, I guess they saw the end coming and wanted to get some of that filthy lucre before it was all gone down the drain....

I have to admit, though, that I sat up, wiped the tv fog from my eyes and said to myself, "Hey, that sounds familiar..." But then I was so excited to hear that old Clash song, I completely overlooked what the product was that was being hawked! So the boys still won out in the end!

#10 cj says:

nice

Getting upset about songs in commercials in 2007? Grow up

#12 steve says:

Robert Palmer did a great take off on Pressure Drop...Still a geat song... thanks Toot's

#13 strummer is gawd says:

hell has frosen over indeed. the only band that matters matters so much less now.

#14 John Silmser says:

Who gets the $?

#15 Topper says:

I was so caught off guard at first that I couldn't even place it for a moment. It just seemed so out of place. London Calling was one thing. Most people between 25-40 have heard that song. But this was so random.... Maybe it will expose more people to the Clash. Beyond that, except for Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen, the good guys lost this debate many years ago so let's just enjoy the song!

#16 Leah says:

To Matt, #3

At least it's just a cover? Are you totally kidding?

Do you have any idea WHO the original artist was? You can't just dismiss Toots & The Maytals.

At the very least, consider that the idols of your idols, those they considered worth covering, should be afforded at least as much respect. If not more.

#17 JamesJonesAgoGo says:

OK, so we all know the song thanks to the Clash, and clearly this cover is intended to mimic their version, but if the song was written by Toots, I doubt the Clash had any say in its getting coopted for commercial use. Hell remains entirely hot. Mick Jones is back making GREAT music with Carbon/Silicon and he is doing it the hard way: refusing as ever to sell out, even to the point of kindling this new band in small venues because he WILL NOT perform the Clash material that put him in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. If he wont PLAY this stuff, he sure ain't SELLIN' it to Nissan. But I LIKE hearing this stuff. We are the post-boomers and this is our soundtrack. Didja think Madison Avenue wouldn't notice?

#18 Pete Zest says:

Did ya feel it? Joe just rolled over.

#19 Stizzle says:

If not for this commercial, I might never have known The Clash covered Pressure Drop

#20 bellydancerontheroof says:

it's a cover, Matt? are you sure?

#21 Chaz NYC says:

As a Clash fan I never thought their faux reggae tracks were so hot. Cant wait to hear WHITE RIOT for a bleach commercial.

#22 slug says:

I'm in the same boat with Stizzle. I love the Clash, most inspiring band, but don't have Super Black Market and had never heard this song. For a second, when I first saw the commercial, I was thinking "great, there is finally a band out there today that sounds good and I can get into." Then I saw "The Clash" on the CD display. Goes to show how timeless their music is.

Personally, I like commercials with good music. I look up the latest iPod song (introduced the Fratellis), and commercials just sound and look cool with Iggy Pop's "Passenger" or "Punkrocker" or anything from the Clash. It beats anything on MTV nowadays.

#23 Music Fan says:

The Clash were not some anti establishment martyrs like people make them out to be. They were just a great rock and roll group, that's all. When or where did The Clash ever act like they were above commerciality in their music. It is just great pop music with an edge. I like hearing good music in commercials and the Clash definitely qualifies.

#24 dstrbdq says:

Alex - never buying a Nissan because of the lyrics of original song that is only backup music in this commercial. What an idiot - get upset over a real cause like poverty or war - get a life.

#25 JAIMSYY says:

They're pushing this commercial a lot lately, and the music still sounds good-- it's just nice to hear some cool music on a commercial, I could care less what they're trying to sell me

#26 funky says:

great, get pissed about nissan using a song the clash ripped off from toots and the maytals. yeah, they were trail blazers all right

#27 Midge Marie says:

I think someone should sew.
This is very disgraceful.
I think we should send a big F-U letter to the company.
Anyone else agree?

#28 Jeff says:

#5 Alex: You think marketing builds the quality in the vehicle therefore you won't by one. Don't forget marketing is last on the list and a really decent vehicle was born before you were ever pissed off about a song.
To be quite honest, until you use your respectable half of the brain, I would prevent myself from having any opinion.
Please don't confuse this for any disagreement about how bad Nissan's marketing is, you might find I agree with you on this if you leave the bashing out.

#29 betsy says:

If the remaining Clash members are cool with theur music( and it is their cover) being used then I think its great their music is still being heard. Maybe someone at Nissian has taste in music. If however it is unapproved, then Nisssian is wrong. After all Joe was cool with Jaguar using London Calling because he thought it was a cool car
