Just really sad.
Sad? how is that sad?
Bravo to a band that found a way to get their music out to the masses and get paid… when radio and video support was nowhere to be found for them… all the while continuing to be one of the most innovative bands around. Much less the fact that they all still live in Oklahoma and have been a band for north of 20 Years!!!…
if you think this is "sad" you dont have a clue about the Flaming Lips. Might want to turn up your TV.. you would be shocked.
haha
What about the Spankrock "Bump" salad dressing commercial? I think that is scarier.
It all ended for me when Ronald Jones left the band.
Hey man...take it for what it is. If you've ever seen the Lips live, and keep track of how many shows they play (without the justifiably inflated ticket prices for their own shows, and the lower-paying festival shows), AND, considering they still sell records at an indie-band's pace, you know damn well they give back to their fans whatever any fat corporate piece-of-shit gives them.
Anyone remember Dell using The WAND? Probably one of the coolest songs in the last five years and their best since Race for the Prize. I mean...yeah...to bad it's Kraft...but that just means, once again as in the grunge days, the big boys are scrambling for some credibility...ENTER, The Lips...plus..the song is childlike and catchy. Just look at any cell-phone or car commercial....all cutting edge music.
If anything...be proud. They chose Wayne and the boys over all top-40, R n' B, Rap, Tween, canned punk, country and adult contempo artists....and...Madonna. And plus...you gotta admit...The Yeah Yeah Yeah song isn't exactly the typical obscure indie-rock jem...it screams "LICENCE ME!". God bless the Lips....let 'em take what they want...they deserve it.
lets hope the Lips take this Kraft money and design a whole new show instead of the slight updates we have been seeing since 1999, yes I know its exciting to see the blood & hand puppets the first time but for a experimental band they sure do fall in line with their pre-programmed backing tracks. I am a fan of the Flaming Lips I just wish that Wayne would pick up the electric guitar for multiple songs in a row
When fans look the other way, yet will point the finger at other musicians for doing the same. And make up reasons why it's "okay" to do so.
It never fails to have devout rabid fans. They will eat it up like cheap salad dressing.
Hi there...
So, the song is supposed to be ironic. And that the song is in a salad dressing commercial is ironic x 10. Certainly The Flaming Lips did not set out to have sell Kraft Condiments. But if that was my song, and for some crazy reason they want to pay me so that my song can sell RANCH you bet I would license Kraft to use it.
Look at all you morons trying to bitch and moan "DUDE, they sold out", "that's... SAD", "i thought it was all about the music bro", and whatever thing you just wrote 'It's always impressive'- you must feel so clever right now.
THE SONG IS ABOUT HOW WE SAY YES TO ALL THE WRONG THINGS AND NO TO ALL THE RIGHT THINGS!!!
So- the whole scenario is perfect. Sure, the flaming lips will license music here and there to make some cash... but this particular commercial is poetic.
I saw The Flaming Lips at this years Sasquatch Festival. Awesome stage performance. Great sing alongs. Had never heard "The Yeah Yeah Yeah Song" until that Festival. Then I see a commercial for salad dressing. I immediately call my girlfriend and say that I think I just heard the Flaming Lips song on a commercial. Lo and behold, I was correct. Bravo for them!
There is not one band that given the opportunity wouldn't take the chance to get their music to the masses. Show me a band who won't and I'll show you a band sharing bunkbeds in their parents laundry room.
Who cares?
If I had a band, all I would care about was the music. I don't care about "image". If Kraft wants to pay me 500K to use one of my songs in their commercials... hell I'll take that money!
Again, forget "image". Either the music is good or it isn't.
Oh and by the way I have never heard a single Flaming Lips song (that I know of at least).
So I'm not defending them because I am a fan. I just hate when people are fans of music not because they like the music, but rather because it is "hip" and "underground". Again, either the music is good, or it sucks. What commercials they play on has nothing to do with the equation.
