Peter Hook's 'hands free' DJ set...
TDS Editors
Did you notice what’s wrong with his performance? Well.. he’s clearly faking it because he didn’t even touch the turntables or CDJ‘s and just keeps turning the effects/volume knobs. He’s also about to get a heart attack any minute… Worst. Performance. Ever.

Haha, you hafta wonder if a lot of djs do that, "phone in" their performance...its just so obvious with him. He's not even using headphones...i watched other YouTube clips and they seem to be the same... just lots of knob-twiddling and enthusiam.
Give the guy a break. It's not like he hasn't paid his dues... this is just the DJ equivalent of those band sets on TV that sound exactly the same as the recording without even the benefit of guitar leads. And I'm sure he had a bottle of amylnitrate close at hand. Sadly, not for recreational purposes.
it's not for who he is (and I fuckin' love JD & NO) that this is not a shameful act, a sad thing to do and insult for everybody who spins records and to the audience.
if it's for this just stay @ home peter, plz.
this isn't some 20-year-old punk kid who thinks DJ'ing is Steve Aoki - this guy went to Danceteria in the 80's, he went to the Paradise Garage, he owned the freaking Hacienda - he was *there*, and he knows what real DJ'ing is, so there's no excuse, really.
Worst part is that he looks miserable doing it...and the mix itself isn't anything special.
I always thought that Hooky had a pretty terrible reputation as a DJ and "turning the effects/volume knobs" was _always_ what he did. Now, if he got his and both Mani's and Rourke's asses on the Freebass thing, we'd be all a lot happier.
As hideous as this is, I REALLY wish I was there when he devised this scheme..."F*@# all, I'll make it look as good as any o those wankers!"
having watched Xavier (Justice) dj from 3 feet away I assure you he knows what the hell he's doing and is phenomenal at it.
I have no reason to believe Justice would ever fake it.
I've been told that Justice pre-record their set and are just faking it too. Can anyone corroborate this?
i spent a few days with hooky on the road and can say with 100% certainty that he mixes 99% of his set. his sets aren't mixed particularly well but he plays 1 cd and then another like you're supposed to. i've seen him DJ about 8 times and was the promoter of 7 of those shows...so i've been in the booth and seen what he does.
the 1% of the time is what is being captured here...he often plays this CD (i think it was a Steve Lawler mix CD?) which includes the Tom Neville song (song #1) and whatever the 2nd song is....presumably he likes both songs and wants to play them in that order. So be it.
HONESTLY, WHAT A FUCKIN' POSER!!!! REALLY, WHO GIVES A SHIT WHO YOU USED TO BE! THIS IS A SUCH A FAILED ATTEMPT AT GETTING OVER ON PEOPLE THAT MAY ACTUALLY HAVE SOME SORT OF RESPECT FOR HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE! FUCK THIS GUY, I WANNA' HEAR SOME DOC MARTIN!!!!!
***URSA MAJOR***
He and his bandmates got one of rock's great mysterious free passes. They were shit. Just a bunch of fumbling fucks who could barely play. This twat works the the DJ booth with the same clueless abandon with which he sawed away at his bass guitar. Terrible nonsense from every angle. Hasn't this fat fuck made enough money from doe-eyed morons to go away and never be seen again?
realy what is there for djs to do on stage in between songs unless they smoke?
http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZ...
...maybe it's from a radio-like transmission.
Being in the booth myself at a few shows, the answer is unfortunately, YES Justice fake it.
He isn't far off from Steve Aoki isnt far off. All we need is a stage dive from Mr. Hook.
No Justice Know Peace, Justice doesn't fake it, they use Ableton for their live set, and CD-Js, quite skillfully at that, for their DJ sets. Maybe you should pull your head out of your fucking ass and speak about something you know about before you try to discredit artists. If Ableton is faking it, then Daft Punk and countless others fake it too.
hooky is the man but this is one serious fake job. now andy rourke, to my surprise, actually has some serious skills behind the decks. this is from me seeing him spin a couple of feet and actually seeing him doing the mixing.
wait a second...steve aoki is considered a real dj now?
Many DJ's show up with a handful of vinyl and already know what they are going to play, like a band has as set list. Most DJ's don't read the crowd, they just play the set they had planned, and hopefully you like it too. So what's the big deal if he pre-mixes his set, then twists some knobs while drinking a beer? Maybe he is being more honest by not pretending to mix it live? Other DJs walk in with vinyl and actually mix it, but they don't deviate from the planned set, so what's the point? Is it so you can admire his ability to use a turntable? I think it should be about the music and having a good time.
I have to defend Peter, because his melodic high end bass makes New Order something special for me.
What DJs do you know of that pre-plan their sets? I think you're going to see the wrong DJs. I've never known one that does that, and trust me, I know a lot of DJs and have spent plenty of time in the booth (both playing and partying). You may have two or three tracks that you always play together, but the bulk of a (good) set is improvised and selected on the fly.
incredulous, your experience is a rare one. i've been djing for many, many years, and i assure you most of the big dj's have their shit sorted before a gig. i agree with you that the best sets i've heard are more spontaneous, but the majority of dj's i know plan at least 75% of their set out beforehand.
Hooky moves like Ricky Gervais' weird dance on The Office.
peter hook pure shit
So suddenly a bloke that stands behind turntables playing other peoples music while pissing about with faders and EQ is faking it!? Where has everyone been hiding? Calling DJ-ing music is like calling Darts a sport. Is there a way to play other peoples records and get paid and it not be fake.
They only do what Dave Lee Travis did except they do it while wearing japanese denim and swedish trainers.
I have promoted many of his Socal shows and although he is not technically mixing everything, he is doing what 90% of all the shit Djs in this world do... play Cds and Mp3 like a fucking iPod. He just has a name and rep to back it, rather than some crap Dj Name/Scene-ster bullshit. He is a lovely guy and has lotsa fans. I must say that Justice are mixing about as much as my iTunes is right now. Posing with Vodka Bottles and Cigs. THEY are the fucking wankers.. Dont even get me started on Steve A-JOKE-ey. That Benni Hanna Trust Fund dushebag has about as much talent as a homeless person rapping in front of a donut shop (wait! less talent actually!). he just has dad's bank account to fund his partying and Record Label. I am sorry... Let me re-phrase that! 98% of all Djs are Shit! Real Deal: Mike Relm, Scratch Pickles, Terminator X, etc... They are the DeeJays!

SO WHO GIVES A FLYING FUCK IF HE'S DJING OR NOT? HES A FUCKIN' LEGEND YOU IDIOTS, FOR ALL I CARE HE COULD GO OUT AND DANCE TO NEW ORDER SONGS AND IT WOULD STILL BE WORTH IT, ALL OF YOU "REAL DJS" SHOULD SHOVE YOUR TURNTABLES UP YOUR ASSES, AS IF BEING A GODDAMN DJ WAS SOMEHOW ARTISTIC OR SKILLFULL, LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR YOU STUPID PRICKS!
